The co-hosts of the Today show’s third hour shared their strong opinions about a controversial bedroom habit during a recent on-camera conversation.
Al Roker was the one who presented the debate to his co-hosts. The show’s official Instagram account later shared a clip from their conversation online on Friday, Dec. 27.

The question at hand was whether or not Roker’s co-hosts—Sheinelle Jones, Craig Melvin and Dylan Dreyer—prefer to use a top sheet on their beds between the fitted sheet that goes over the mattress and the comforter that typically goes on top. As Roker went on to explain, “Millennials and Gen Zers are anti-top sheet.”
Jones, Melvin and Dreyer were quick to explain that they not only use top sheets, but believe that not doing so is incorrect.
“One hundred percent top sheet,” Dreyer said.
“Who doesn’t believe in a top sheet?” Melvin asked.
When a person off camera admitted to leaving a top sheet off their bed, Dreyer called the move “disgusting” while Jones said, “That’s just dirty.”
While Jones pointed out that some hotels skip top sheets and use duvet covers only, Dreyer wondered aloud what people do when they purchase a new bedding set, which typically comes with a top sheet.
“If you’re not using a top sheet, you’re wrong,” Melvin chimed in.
In the comment section for Friday’s Instagram video, fans were quick to write in about which bedroom setup they prefer.
“Always a top sheet!” one viewer wrote as another agreed, writing, “15000000% top sheet!!!!”
“TOP SHEET!!! Don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t. How often is that comforter getting washed?!?! lol,” an Instagram user wrote.
Top sheet detractors also left comments on the post, with one writing they are a “Hard no on the top sheet” as another agreed their bedroom uses a “Fitted sheet only.”
One Instagram user shared that they use a blanket in place of a top sheet, while another said they use a duvet instead that they wash “every week.”
Others focused their comments on the Today co-hosts’ strong reactions to the debate. “Craig is appalled! 😂😂😂,” one fan laughed as another commented, “Sheinelle, you’re so funny!!! ‘That’s just dirty’. 😂😂😂.”
