Toronto needs 3,000 volunteers for the 2026 World Cup and no experience is needed to apply, Life in canada

11 August 20253 Mins Read

On this date in 10 months, the 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off, and Toronto will welcome thousands of fans from all over the world. To help with that, the City of Toronto has launched a campaign to help recruit more than 3,000 volunteers.

The competition will start on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as Mexico play their opener at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The next day, BMO Field, temporarily renamed Toronto Stadium for the tournament, will make history as the first venue in Canada to host a FIFA World Cup match, as Canada plays their Group B opener.

Toronto will host a total of six games. That includes Canada’s opener, and group stage matches on Wednesday, June 17, Saturday, June 20, Tuesday, June 23, and Friday, June 26, until its last game — a round-of-32 knockout tie on Thursday, July 2, 2026.

FIFA launched a recruitment campaign in June, but the City is now getting on board and is seeking to fill 3,000 voluntary positions.

In a press release shared on Monday, the City stated that volunteers will support fan experiences, accessibility services, media operations, and event logistics throughout the tournament.

“This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a global event, demonstrate civic pride and help showcase the city’s diversity and hospitality on the world stage,” they wrote.

Applications are open to everyone, and no experience is required. There are opportunities for residents of all backgrounds, including newcomers, retirees, and multilingual community members.

Some of the roles include:

  • Access management
  • Accommodation
  • Accreditation
  • Anti-doping
  • Arrivals and departures
  • Brand protection
  • Broadcast services
  • Ceremonies
  • Competition management
  • Event transport
  • Fan operations
  • Guest operations
  • Hospitality
  • Host city ambassador
  • Language services
  • Partner rights delivery
  • Partnership management
  • Media operations
  • Sustainability and human rights
  • Team services
  • Ticketing
  • Volunteer management
  • Uniforms

In October, there will be volunteer team tryouts, where you can connect with fellow volunteers, management and experience a taste of what the tournament will be like.

Offers will be made between December and February. If you are selected, you will receive training from April onwards, an official 2026 FIFA World Cup uniform, and accreditation for the tournament.

To help you with your application, virtual volunteer information sessions will be held on:

  • Monday, August 11 at 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 14 at 12 p.m.
  • Monday, August 18 at 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 21 at 12 p.m.

While it’s not paid, volunteers will enjoy exclusive recognition items, meals, and refreshments during their shifts, as well as a volunteer certificate. More than just perks, the role offers hands-on education, the opportunity to form lasting friendships, and the chance to be part of a historic international event right here in Toronto.
