If you’re a regular Toronto Public Library user, you’ll have to start dishing out a few cents for basic services like printing and photocopying soon.

Toronto Public Libraries began offering free printing and photocopying services as an interim solution following the Oct. 28, 2023 cyberattack that disrupted its computer system, technology over 100 branches, and shut down its website for months.

The library previously revealed that the attack is believed to have exposed the social insurance numbers, addresses, and names of employees dating back to 1998. For months following the attack, users were not able to place a hold on books, use library computers, or access their accounts.

“Service restoration, which has been a complex and detailed process involving enterprise-wide analysis and coordination, is nearing completion. Staff have worked tirelessly to restore all services as quickly as possible,” a staff report released in February 2024 reads.

“The complexity of the task, given TPL’s extensive network of 100 library branches, a multi-service Data Centre, and more than 5,000 staff and public computers makes this task more difficult and means there must be a gradual and measured approach to protect and reinstate services.”

Now, signs have been popping up at library branches informing users that paid printing and photocopying is set to return this year. Pricing will range from $0.15 for black and white printing (8.5 x 11) to $0.55 for colour printing (any paper size).

“While this temporary measure has helped ensure continued access to these essential services for our customers, we expect to reinstate paid printing and photocopying in late February,” TPL said in a statement to blogTO.

“This return to our standard fee structure aligns with our long-term operational model and sustainable resource management practices. Remote printing will also return, and we will be adding new enhancements, including updated technology and colour printing at every branch. We understand this change will affect our customers, and we’re working to ensure a smooth transition.”
