An intimate restaurant in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood — which was named after its street and address — is coincidentally gearing up to move to a new location.
156 Cumberland opened its doors three years ago, after Jennifer and MJ Jeong were offered a partnership in the space by Bo Seo, the CEO of the Kibo Sushi franchise, who operated the now-temporarily shuttered Secret Garden next door.
The modern dinner venue serves French-based dishes infused with nostalgic Korean flavours and techniques. The menu includes dishes like beef tartare with gochujang, potato pancakes, pork belly, sujebi (Korean pasta), and Korean ssam platters with proteins like hanger steak, dry-aged striploin, and bone-in beef short-rib.
In an announcement made to its Instagram last month, the restaurant’s staff announced that their time at their Yorkville location was coming to an end.
156 Cumberland’s manager and owner, Jennifer Jeong, confirmed to blogTO that the restaurant’s last day of service has moved up to Dec. 27, as opposed to the previous Christmas Eve date announced before.
“The reason for our move is due to the end of our lease agreement,” Jeong said, explaining that the restaurant’s new location will open its doors near Queen and Dovercourt in the spring of 2025.
“We are currently working with the Make Nice project in designing the new space,” she added.
And as for their name, “we are still undecided with the name, but we will be bringing with us the same menu concept and our amazing team.”
