As Trina Braxton mourns the loss of her beloved husband, Von Scales, fans are remembering their touching love story. The pair met through a mutual friend and instantly hit it off. Fans watched as their relationship blossomed on her family reality series, Braxton Family Values. They shared a joint online cooking show that Braxton’s followers tuned into weekly. Braxton gushed about why their love was different from the relationships she experienced before Scales.
In a 2020 interview with Blavity, Braxton spoke about her relationship with Scales. Having been married and divorced twice previously, she promised herself that moving forward, despite being a public figure and working so closely with her famous family personally and professionally, she had to set boundaries around her marriage. One of her boundaries includes not involving her family, or the world, in her romantic relationships, especially after the controversies that followed her marriage to Gabriel Solis throughout the show’s run for the first few seasons.
“When you invite other people into your relationships, and you and your mate decide to move forward from whatever drama but your family or viewers don’t, that causes extra stress,” she said at the time. “Sometimes, you have to reserve something for yourself. Of course, I speak to my friends and family during certain moments of girl talk, but I chose not to be as free as I was before it came to divulging information.”
It worked in her favor. Though her engagement and wedding ceremony were featured on the show, her and Scales’ marriage overall was not a central storyline. For Braxton, the third time proved to be a charm, and she attributed her marital success to Scales’ emotional maturity.
“Von is six years older than I am and there’s a certain something that I wish I knew before about a mature man,” Braxton explained. “[Our marriage works because] we’ve both been married before, we already have our children. We both know what we want. We both know what we don’t want. We’ve lived enough life. We both traveled enough to know exactly what we want and what we’re looking for. And when you become a certain age, you just don’t have time for the games.”
Scales died at the age of 58 on October 1. He reportedly dealt with heart issues in the years leading up to his passing.
