As Canadians head to the polls today for the 2025 federal election, Donald Trump already seems to have an ideal candidate in mind — himself.
On Monday, April 28, the U.S. president took to his Truth Social platform to weigh in on Canada’s federal election, telling Canadians who they should vote for while once again floating the idea of Canada becoming America’s 51st state. “Good luck to the Great people of Canada,” Trump wrote.
“Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power, for free, to the highest level in the World, have your Car, Steel, Aluminum, Lumber, Energy, and all other businesses, QUADRUPLE in size, WITH ZERO TARIFFS OR TAXES, if Canada becomes the cherished 51st State of the United States of America.”
Trump also said that Canadians should vote for whoever will ensure there is “no more artificially drawn line from many years ago.”
While he didn’t name any Canadian candidates directly, Trump’s message sounds a lot like he’s campaigning for himself, just north of the U.S. border.
“America can no longer subsidize Canada with the Hundreds of Billions of Dollars a year that we have been spending in the past. It makes no sense unless Canada is a State,” he said.
Meanwhile, Canada’s major federal parties have all promised to push back against Trump’s rhetoric and his history of tariffs.
Mark Carney’s Liberals have pledged to support Canadian auto workers, diversify trade, and strengthen the food sector.
Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives plan to respond to U.S. tariffs targeting Canada’s steel, aluminum, and auto industries.
Jagmeet Singh’s NDP aims to protect workers, safeguard jobs, and shield families from Trump’s policies.
The Green Party’s Elizabeth May and Jonathan Pedneault have also promised to prioritize Canadian businesses and infrastructure to defend against any fallout.”
