TTC to shut down 6.5-kilometre stretch of subway for an entire day this weekend

TTC subway passengers should brace for a major disruption planned for this coming weekend.

The transit agency will shut down a significant stretch of the Line 1 subway on Saturday, January 18, 2025, halting service for….yup, you guessed it…track work.

A portion of the line spanning five stations from St. Clair to York Mills will be out of service for the full day on Saturday, a stretch covering approximately 6.5 kilometres of track.

Weekend commuters relying on this segment won’t be entirely out of luck, as the TTC will run shuttle buses and staff stations to assist passengers.

Four of the five stations along the closure will remain open for passengers to purchase fares and connect with surface routes, though Lawrence Station will remain inaccessible due to ongoing work for the TTC’s Easier Access program.

Service along this stretch is planned to resume in time for the start of Sunday service on January 19, by 8 a.m.

Saturday’s coming subway outage will mark the first such weekend subway closure of 2025, and follows a turbulent year of closures and outages that tested the patience of TTC riders.

This latest service disruption comes on the heels of news that things may actually improve on the transit network in the years to come. 

A new TTC budget announcement has pledged to invest billions of dollars toward repairs to the aging subway system, which is currently plagued by frequent outages and rolling “reduced speed zones” where trains crawl along due to ongoing track work.
