Ukraine news: PM Denys Shmyhal visits Canada

Ottawa –

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to meet with the Prime Minister of Ukraine in Toronto this morning.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmykhal is expected to thank Canada for its support and ask for more help in the form of weapons and money.

Canada has provided billions of dollars in economic and military aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022.

This includes a $2.4 billion loan announced in the federal budget last month, as well as tanks, armored vehicles and ammunition.

Shmyhal’s visit comes on the heels of reports suggesting that the Ukrainian military is preparing a spring offensive aimed at pushing Russian forces out of the country’s east.

The visit also coincided with the apparent leak of classified US documents on social media detailing Ukrainian and Russian military capabilities and losses in the war.

This report by the Canadian Press was first published on April 11, 2023.
