UN Tourism and the European Accessibility Resource Centre (AccessibleEU) have partnered with accessibility advocates to foster policies, standards, incentives, and business strategies prioritizing tourism inclusivity.
Their collaborative report, “Advancing Accessible Tourism for Destinations, Companies, and People”, developed with the Government of San Marino and AccessibleEU, features 25 exemplars of accessibility from various countries. The report also offers insights into improvements in accessibility across different types of tourism – including cultural, natural, urban, rural, and sports tourism, as well as festivals, pilgrimage routes, shopping tourism, and transportation. The report was officially unveiled at the 2025 FITUR International Tourism Trade Fair, where discussions on inclusive and accessible tourism continued.
During the seminar “Accessible Tourism: Harnessing the Benefits of Inclusive Destinations for Companies and People”, representatives from UN Tourism Member States and accessibility leaders emphasized the need for improved communication about accessible offerings, strengthening transnational cooperation, promoting employment for individuals with disabilities in the sector, and leveraging innovation and data to increase public awareness and attract investments.
UN Tourism’s Affiliate Members and strategic partners, including the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance (WHSA), along with leading tour operators and transportation companies, advocated for harmonizing accessibility standards, leveraging technology to promote accessible experiences, measuring the impacts of accessibility advancements, and incorporating accessibility into core business strategies. The commitment of the private and public sectors to accessible tourism highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure inclusion and accessibility in global tourism.
