Black History Month takes place in February in recognition of the history, contributions and culture of Canadians of African and African-American descent.

February is Black History Month in both Canada and the United States (in America it is also known as African-American History Month). As a result, Vancouver features a number of performances and events that honour the achievements and contributions of Black Canadians.
The theme for Black History Month in 2026 is “30 Years of Black History: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations – From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.”

Film Screenings in 2026
One series of film screenings scheduled for Black History Month in 2026 is Black Brilliance on Screen. It features one film each Friday at the Vancouver Public Library’s Central Branch, located at 350 West Georgia Street. There are also a couple of films at the VIFF Centre. Details about the various screenings are below.

Various performances happen across Vancouver during Black History Month. One example is described below.
Monday, February 9th (2026)
Christ Church Cathedral typically hosts a Songs of Freedom concert during Black History Month. In previous years, the show was hosted by Marcus Mosely and featured performances by Dawn Pemberton, Krystle Dos Santos, and more. 2026 details are to be confirmed.
