Vermont investigating death near border crossing from Quebec

Vermont police are investigating the death of a man who crossed the border into the United States from Quebec last week after collapsing.

They say U.S. Border Patrol agents spotted Jose Leos Cervantes and two others crossing the border into the Netherlands, Virginia, around 10:30 p.m. on February 19.

Police said in a news release that Leo Cervantes collapsed when he encountered agents, while the other two men ran to Canada.

A 45-year-old man from Aguascalientes, Mexico, was taken to hospital, but his death is not considered suspicious.

This is the second time someone has died across the border this winter. A 44-year-old man was found frozen to death in a wooded area near Saint-Bernard de la Col, Quebec, in his early January. He was about to enter America.

Last week, a 31-year-old Ecuadorian woman from Connecticut was charged with illegally attempting to extradite three people within the United States following Leo Cervantes’ death.
