Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will be sticking with the Toronto Blue Jays for a long time.
The team and star slugger have agreed on a massive 14-year, $500 million extension, per The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal. The agreement is contingent on Guerrero passing a physical and is the third-largest contract in MLB history.
There are no deferrals included in this Blue Jays contract, per Rosenthal, unlike the $700 million monster deal signed between superstar Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers back in December 2023. Because of that, Sunday’s extension is the second largest in MLB history by present-day guaranteed money.
Guerrero has made it to four straight MLB All-Star Games and finished sixth last season in AL MVP voting. The 26-year-old already has three seasons with at least 30 home runs and led the American League with 48 home runs in the 2021 season.
There were reports on Sunday suggesting the two sides were getting close to an extension, and now the news has finally been made official. This ends what has been months of negotiations and keeps Guerrero from testing the free agency market at the end of this season.
The homegrown star now seems set to play his entire career with the Blue Jays. The club initially signed him when he was just 16 years old.
The Blue Jays got off to a hot start this season but now sit 5-5 after losing a few games, good for third place in the AL East. Guerrero is still looking for his first home run of the year.
