Feb. 1, 2026, 1:47 a.m. MT: Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera disconnects.

According to some experts, disconnecting the doorbell camera may have been a “test” for Nancy’s abductors to see if there would be an immediate response from law enforcement.

“What’s with that 20-minute gap? The camera gets ripped off the doorbell, but then there’s motion seen on the camera outside, you know, 20 minutes later,” NBC national law enforcement and intelligence correspondent Tom Winter explained on TODAY. Winter said that it’s possible the culprit “took the doorbell camera off and waited to see if police arrived—would that alert anything? Would that do anything? And then, perhaps thinking the coast was clear, [he] goes back to the house. We don’t know. We don’t know the specifics of what camera detected the motion either. That’s a bit of a challenge.”

The PCSD publicly declared her Tucson home a crime scene early on Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, though they declined to give specific details about what they saw in her house that made them suspect foul play. Once declaring the home a crime scene, search efforts paused as the investigation pivoted from simply a missing persons case into a criminal case (specifically, a possible homicide case, per TMZ).

The same morning, Savannah posted an Instagram message asking her followers for prayers and begging the world to “bring her home,” noting that her mother is “a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant.”

Later that day, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos alleged that Nancy had been taken from her home “against her will,” likely in the middle of the night and possibly from her bed.

“She is very limited in her mobility, we know she didn’t just walk out of there,” Nanos said. “There were other things at the scene that indicate that she did not leave on her own,” he added, noting that because of her mobility problems, Nancy couldn’t walk more than 50 yards by herself.

Nancy reportedly also has other medical issues and needs medication daily to survive.

That evening, the sheriff’s office set up an online tip line for the Nancy Guthrie case, offering a $2,500 reward for any images, videos or information leading to an arrest.

On Monday night, TMZ reported that the Pima County Sheriff’s Office was looking into registered sex offenders in the area in connection with Nancy’s disappearance. They were also combing through video footage from cameras at Nancy’s house, neighboring homes, local businesses and traffic lights for any clues, and reportedly were also working with the FBI.

Some reports claimed that Nancy’s pacemaker stopped syncing up with her Apple Watch. While that sounds obviously macabre given the circumstances, it doesn’t necessarily mean her heart stopped beating, but that the devices are out of one another’s range, as her Apple Watch was left behind in her home.

Feb. 2, 2026, evening MT: KOLD 13 receives a ransom note about Nancy Guthrie via email.

KOLD 13 in Arizona received a ransom note in their newsroom’s tip email and passed it on to the Sheriff’s Department.

“A lot of it is information that only someone who was holding her for ransom would know,” Mary Coleman, KOLD 13 News anchor, told CNN. The note contained “some very sensitive information and things that people who weren’t there when she was taken captive wouldn’t know,” she said, adding, “It also included a dollar amount, a deadline and, again, other specifics that only Guthrie’s abductor might know, so that definitely raised some red flags … We immediately sent that information over to the sheriff’s department, and they’re, of course, looking into the legitimacy of it.”

Feb. 3, 2026, 11:12 a.m. MT: TMZ obtains a ransom note about Nancy Guthrie.

TMZ reported on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, at 11:12 a.m. MT that they received a ransom note about Nancy. The note demanded a Bitcoin payment “in the millions” with a deadline and mentioned specific details about Nancy’s apparel and the condition of her home. They forwarded the ransom note and all details to authorities, who said they were aware of and investigating all ransom notes circulating online. It’s unclear if TMZ received the same ransom note as KOLD.

The ransom note has two deadlines, one of Thursday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m., and the second for Monday, Feb. 9, with a “more serious consequence,” per TMZ.

Authorities so far said they weren’t aware of any specific threats to Nancy and that it wasn’t clear if her abduction was targeted or had a specific motive.

During a press conference about the case, Nanos told reporters that he doesn’t think that whoever might have abducted Nancy would be a threat to the public.

“Well, we have crime in Tucson all the time, right? Like any city, and so there, when you say a threat to the public, is there somebody out there who’s kidnapping elderly people in the middle of the night every night? We’ve not heard that,” he said. “We don’t believe that’s the case. We do believe that Nancy was taken from her home against her will, and that’s where we’re at.”

Nanos also noted that there was an empty frame for a security camera outside of Nancy’s home and that investigators were looking into whether or not a camera was taken at the time of her alleged abduction.

He added that he has “no clue” how many people may have been involved in her abduction, noting, “It could have been one. It could have been more.”

“Every lead and tip is important, we are aggressively pursuing and looking into every single one,” John Edwards, assistant special agent in charge of the Tucson, Ariz., FBI office, urged in the Tuesday press conference. “Again, please help us bring Nancy Guthrie home.”

Feb. 3, 2026, approx. 9 p.m. MT: Reporter Ashleigh Banfield alleges that Savannah Guthrie’s brother-in-law Tommaso Cioni is a suspect.

In her Drop Dead Serious podcast, Ashleigh Banfield claimed a law enforcement source told her that Annie Guthrie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, was a possible “prime suspect” in Nancy’s disappearance and that Annie’s car was seized as evidence in the case.

“They have towed Annie Guthrie’s car. And there is some connection to Annie Guthrie’s car and Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law—that would be Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni, age 50 from Tucson, Arizona, married to Annie P. Guthrie, Savannah’s sister,” Banfield said on her show. “And my law enforcement source tells me that Tommaso Cioni is the prime suspect in this case. Again, law enforcement source tells me that Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law, married to Annie Guthrie, Savannah’s sister, is—may bemay be a prime suspect in this case. At the very least, let me tamp that down, because sometimes it’s the first person you’re looking at, not ‘prime’ as in there’s no one else, OK? So, let’s be really mindful of that. Families are always looked at first as well.”

Nanos told TMZ that there was no confirmation that a vehicle was seized and that investigators are still waiting for some tests they ran on forensic evidence.

Annie was one of the last people to see her mother alive when they went out to dinner on Saturday evening and Annie dropped Nancy off at home afterward. It isn’t yet publicly known if Cioni joined them for dinner. Banfield also alleged that all the security cameras on Nancy’s property had been smashed. NBC News reported that there was a “technical issue” with the cameras at Nancy’s home, but didn’t specify what it was.

Feb. 4, 2026, 8:07 a.m. MT: Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos says he believes Nancy is still alive and shuts down speculation that Savannah Guthrie’s brother-in-law abducted her mother Nancy.

In an interview with NBC News, Nanos said he believes Nancy is still alive, noting, “We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here. She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her.” He also said that the department received “hundreds of leads” in the case and that there was no indication they’ve yet found suggesting it was a targeted abduction.

After several reports claimed that Savannah’s brother-in-law was a suspect in the investigation into Nancy’s abduction, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released a statement saying that wasn’t actually the case.

“At this point, investigators have not identified a suspect or person of interest in this case,” the statement reads. “Detectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie.”

“Detectives are working closely with the Guthrie family. While we appreciate the public’s concern, the sharing of unverified accusations or false information is irresponsible and does not assist the the investigation,” the statement continued. The sheriff’s office then reiterated, “No suspect or person of interest has been identified at this time.”

Feb. 4, 2026, 12:48 p.m. MT: Investigators claim they are looking at a trespassing case in the area to see if it’s linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department told TMZ that earlier in January, an elderly man spotted a trespasser outside of his home in Tucson, roughly 10 minutes from Nancy Guthrie’s home. The alleged trespasser reportedly got spooked by floodlights that were activated when he was on the man’s property, and he fled before the homeowner could see what he looked like (and before he could attempt to actually break into or enter the home). Investigators are looking into that case to see if it may be linked to Nancy’s alleged abduction.

Feb. 4, 2026, approx. 4 p.m. MT: Investigators search Nancy Guthrie’s house as well as Annie Guthrie and Tommaso Cioni’s home.

NBC News reported that investigators were at Nancy Guthrie’s house, some of whom were probing blood found on the property. A rep for the Pima County Sheriff’s office said in a statement, “Detectives are continuing to conduct follow-up at the home and in the neighborhood.”

TMZ reported that on Wednesday afternoon, law enforcement agents searched Annie Guthrie and Cioni’s home. One agent photographed on the scene wore an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) badge and appeared to be carrying a Cellebrite Universal Forensic Extraction Device, which investigators use to retrieve data from all sorts of devices, including deleted and encrypted content. Reports also suggested that agents seized items from inside Annie and Cioni’s home, but did not specify what the items were.

Other reports claimed that the agents merely were at Annie and Cioni’s home for a “meeting” and that Savannah was also present.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that multiple divisions and agencies were working on the case, noting, “This does not mean an acronym or unit name on the shirt is indicative of a particular crime associated with this case.”

In a statement to Elizabeth Vargas Reports on NewsNation, Pima County Chief of Detectives Fabian Pacheco explained, “Although this may appear unusual, it represents the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continuing their work into this very difficult and complicated case with the assistance of FBI agents. And it’s not unusual to return to a crime scene. That all depends on what way the investigation is going, what information you’re receiving, what leads you’re following up on, so they may have reason to come back to the house to just continue their investigation and make sure they’re as thorough as possible in processing and completing the processing of the crime scene. And it, again, shows how hard their working on this.”

Feb. 4, 2026, approx. 5 p.m. MT: Savannah Guthrie, Charles Camron Guthrie and Annie Guthrie beg for proof of life for Nancy and to bring their mother home.

Savannah Guthrie posted a tearful video with her siblings on Feb. 4, 2026, begging for proof of life for Nancy and to bring her home.

“We too have heard the reports about a ransom letter in the media. As a family, we are doing everything that we can. We are ready to talk,” Savannah said. “However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.”

Savannah added that for her, Annie and Charles, their mother is “our heart and our home.”

“She is 84 years old. Her health, her heart is fragile,” Savannah urged. “She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer.”

“On behalf of our family, we want to thank all of you for the prayers for our beloved mom, Nancy,” she added. “We feel them and we continue to believe that she feels them too. Our mom is a kind, faithful, loyal, fiercely loving woman of goodness and light. She is funny, spunky, and clever. She has grandchildren that adore her and crowd around her and cover her in kisses. She loves fun and adventure. She is a devoted friend. She is full of kindness and knowledge. Talk to her and you’ll see.”

“Mommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman,” Savannah concluded. “You are God’s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley He is with you. Everyone is looking for you mommy, everywhere. We will not rest. Your children will not rest until we are together again. We speak to you every moment and we pray without ceasing and we rejoice in advance for the day that we hold you in our arms again. We love you.”

Annie spoke next.

“The light is missing from our lives. Nancy is our mother. We are her children. She is our beacon,” the writer and jeweler said. “She holds fast to joy in all of life’s circumstances. She chooses joy, day after day. Despite already having passed through great trials of pain and grief, we are always going to be merely human. Just normal human people who need our mom. Mama, mama, if you’re listening, we need you to come home. We miss you.”

Charles closed out the heartbreaking clip.

“We love you mama,” he said. “Stay strong.”

Feb. 5, 2026, approx. 2:30 p.m. MT: Investigators reveal Nancy’s blood was found at the scene and that an arrest was made for a falsified ransom note.

In a wide-ranging press conference on Thursday afternoon, FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke told reporters that a ransom note had a deadline of 5 p.m. that day and that there had been no proof of life provided.

“If a transfer wasn’t made, the second demand was for next Monday,” Janke added. “I’m not going to go beyond that.”

Authorities also announced the arrest of a man who sent falsified ransom notes to Cioni and Annie Guthrie.

After being read his Miranda rights, Derrick Callella confessed to police that he texted Cioni and Annie requesting payment in bitcoin shortly after the family released their video begging Nancy’s captors to bring her home. Callella allegedly used a spoof phone number registered to his email address, and his IP address led cops to his California home address. Court documents allege that he was following the news about the case before he sent the bitcoin texts. He also called a member of the family.

“The Department of Justice will protect victims and families at all costs, and grief profiteers will be held accountable,” U.S. Attorney Timothy Courchaine said in a statement. “This case came together in under 24 hours because of the coordinated work of the FBI, local law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.”

“My next message is to those imposters who are trying to take advantage and profit from this situation,” Janke warned. “We will investigate and ensure you are held accountable for your actions.”

The FBI announced that they were offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to Nancy’s recovery or an arrest in the case. As of this writing, no suspects or persons of interest have been identified.

In the same press conference, Nanos said that it was Nancy’s blood found at the front of her home.

“Every single lead is looked at,” Nanos said of the case. “We’re actively looking at everybody we come across in this case. Everybody. I wouldn’t say anybody is ruled out yet.”

When asked if he thought the worst-case scenario (Nancy being dead) was likely, Nanos replied, “Well, I’m certainly fearful of that. I think we all are. But … we operate from a position that until we know, she’s out there, she’s alive, and we’re going to continue thinking that way until we find her.”

Nanos also said he likely would not do many more full-scale press conferences without significant developments in the case, noting, “It’s pretty pointless to just keep hounding the same things over and over.”

The lack of video evidence in Nancy’s disappearance is making cracking the case hard, Nanos admitted.

“It is concerning, it’s actually almost disappointing because you’ve got your hopes up,” Nanos told the Associated Press in an interview on Friday, Feb. 6, 2026. “OK, they got an image. ‘Well, we do, but we don’t.’”

“I wish technology was as easy as we believe it is, that ‘Here’s a picture, here’s your bad guy.’ But it’s not,” he explained. “There are pieces of information that come to us from these tech groups that say ‘This is what we have and we can’t get anymore.’”

The sheriff also confirmed that he spoke with a housekeeper, landscape crew, pool maintenance person and an Uber driver who took Nancy to her family’s house the evening of Jan. 31.

“We’ve talked. They’ve all been very cooperative,” he said. “They provided certain information that was helpful to us.”

Nanos also told reporters Friday that he believes Nancy is still alive.

“What I believe is that Nancy was removed from her home against her will, and that we need to find her. That’s what I believe. She’s still alive,” he said. “I believe that I have no choice until something shows me, a piece of physical evidence shows me that that’s different.”

Feb. 6, 2026, afternoon MT: Investigators find a camera and potential video evidence in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.

Investigators reportedly found a camera on the roof of Nancy Guthrie’s house after a neighbor pointed out how clean it appeared in aerial footage.

“You see in that image, you see how white her roof is,” Nancy’s neighbor Laura Gargano explained on CNN. “The previous three weeks we had a lot of rain, so it would be normal for a roof to a be little dirty after it rains.” Gargano pointed out that Nancy’s roof, like her own, was flat, but appeared unusually pristine considering the recent weather conditions.

“I just want to say first of all, thank you so much for all of the prayers and the love that we have felt—my sister, my brother and I. And that our mom has felt,” she began. “Because we believe that somehow, someway, she is feeling these prayers and that God is lifting her in this moment and in this darkest place.”

“We believe our mom is still out there,” she continued. “We need your help. Law enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock, trying to bring her home, trying to find her. She was taken and we don’t know where. And we need your help.”

“I’m coming on just to ask you, not just for your prayers but no matter where you are — even if you’re far from Tucson—if you see anything, if you hear anything, if there’s anything at all that seems strange to you that you report to law enforcement,” she urged. “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”

Feb. 10, 2026, 8:45 a.m. MT: Savannah Guthrie and Nancy Guthrie’s pastor speaks out and asks for prayers.

Pastor Michael Rudzena of Good Shepherd New York, Nancy and Savannah Guthrie’s church, sat down with TODAY to discuss the case.

“[She’s] a strong woman and she is fiercely loving,” Rudzena told Hoda Kotb. “Over the years, we’ve gotten to know what makes her tick, in some ways from a faith perspective. Songs that meant something to her, scriptures that are meaningful for her.”

“Prayer opens up possibility in our own hearts,” he continued. “Prayer is that dynamic connection with God that introduces new possibilities. Leaving the door open for hope is a way to fight against that sense of fatality, or fatalism. It’s that sense that we can feel when bad things are happening. A sense of despair and gloom can sort of cloud our minds and hearts. And prayer is a way of channeling that feeling toward God with a hope that God will lead us to it and get us to the other side. And that’s the confidence of faith.”

Rudzena said that one of Nancy’s favorite Bible verses, “May you find the light to guide you home,” has even more significance since her disappearance. He explained, “I think we’re all putting ourselves in the position of knowing that dark experiences can be overwhelming, and when we think about Nancy, our heart goes out to Nancy. We don’t know what we don’t know, and yet, we know that light shines in dark circumstances and it’s light that gets us out of them. I think a guiding light is powerful. And our hope is that God is a guiding light for her.”

The morning after the second ransom deadline passed, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department released black and white images of a masked, armed individual on Nancy Guthrie’s porch. They reported that investigators believe this individual tampered with Nancy’s doorbell camera.

FBI director Kash Patel posted videos and photos on his own X account as well, writing, “Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted or inaccessible due to a variety of factors—including the removal of recording devices. The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.”

According to NBC News, the reason it took long to get the images was the disconnection of the Ring camera and lack of a subscription for any of the cameras in and around Nancy home. Federal investigators worked with the companies behind the cameras and subpoenaed them for any footage they might have, and they were able to recover the images seen above.

Nancy Guthrie is TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother. She is believed to have been abducted from her home.

Retired NYPD Sergeant Joe Giacalone told Parade there could be several motives for the suspected kidnapping.

“The three biggest ones that we know is love, money, and drugs, right?” Giacalone said. “Those are the three biggest motives that people do this stuff. But in a situation like this, you also have to consider a revenge factor, a cover-up factor, meaning that the person found out something within the family and now they’re trying to keep it under wraps, that kind of thing.”

“The investigators gather and they sit there and they huddle up, so to speak, and they try to create their hypothesis,” he continued. “And listen, most people are victimized by someone they know, and that’s always the starting point. And then you let the evidence in the information direct you into which one of those categories it’s going to be.”
