Marathon Season 2 is almost here, after a rocky first three months for Bungie’s sci-fi extraction shooter. The game itself is brilliant, but unfortunately it has struggled to retain players, with some citing how unforgiving it is, others claiming the onboarding isn’t effective enough, and with the ongoing feud between Marathon and Destiny 2 players… it’s all resulting in a need for the player base to climb.
One step Bungie is taking to make this happen is “open play” week, which essentially means Marathon is going free-to-play for one week only, at the same time Season 2 begins. If you’re wondering exactly when that is, here’s when Marathon Season 2 will start time in your time zone.
Marathon Season 2 start time in your time zone
While Bungie has not confirmed this officially, based on previous updates, Marathon Season 2 will likely start at 1 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, June 2. Here’s how that looks in your time zone:

What to expect in Marathon Season 2
Since this is the first time a season has finished in Marathon, it’s somewhat uncharted territory, but Bungie hasn’t been shy about letting us know what to expect. The first, and most important, thing is that you’ll lose all of your accumulated gear so far. This is because from one season to the next, everyone’s inventory and progress is wiped to make sure players start on a level playing field again.
There are plenty of new additions coming to Season 2 though, including but not limited to:
- A new shell, the Sentinel: this archetype is focused around controlling and defending space, and its abilities, such as the Defender System and Snare Mine, are all about trapping enemies and protecting allies.
- The Dire Marsh map is getting a night variant, which will require mastering a few new tools, including a flashlight, vector rounds and grenades which illuminate the environment, and darksight scopes.
- There are two new weapons coming into the fray, including an SMG and a battle pistol, alongside eight new chips.
- The Cradle is the name of a new skill point-esque system, where you can improve your runner throughout the course of a season. Turn any items you don’t want into Cradle experience, then level up the Cradle to earn energy which you can spend on stat buffs.
- Cryo Archive will be returning on June 11, and ranked mode will be back on June 14.
While those are the highlights, that’s by no means everything coming in Season 2, so check out the official Bungie blog post to learn more.
