Mystery western starring Josh Brolin is taking the streaming chart at Amazon Prime Video by storm.
What do you do when you want to milk Yellowstone universe but Taylor Sheridan can’t release a brand new show every single week (not for the lack of trying, mind you). You will introduce a whole new universe. Or just THE universe in this case. Outer Range is about a rancher fighting for his land and family who stumbles upon an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. It’s being marketed as a neo-western mystery thriller which is quite a mouthful. And it is also the first TV starring role for Josh Brolin in 20 years. Amazon is nailing its adult-focused production lately. With Jack Ryan, Reacher, The Expanse, and the upcoming Night Sky, they know how to consistently reach the older audience. It is a sound strategy, just look at their top ten. You will also find Clarkson’s Farm, Picard, The Boys, or The Grand Tour, and Marvellous Mrs. Maisel. That is far from the usual streaming fluff you can get elsewhere.
Outer Range is released on weekly basis (two episodes premiering each Friday) which is a fitting format for a mystery Lost-like title with lots of twists and cliffhangers. It will conclude on May 6th but expect this show to be around the top ten for several weeks afterward. Amazon’s shows have long legs and they generate big buzz that brings binge-watchers long after the show has ended.
