Cynthia Erivo did not achieve EGOT status — someone who has won at least one award each at the Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tonys — during the Sunday, March 2, 2025, Oscars.
The Wicked star lost to Mikey Madison for Best Actress at this year’s Academy Awards; her category also included Karla Sofía Gascón, Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres.

Fans were clearly upset over the loss, with one writing on X (formerly Twitter), “The academy voters just robbed cynthia erivo of obtaining egot.”
Another shared, “Cynthia Erivo didn’t belt Defying Gravity in your faces for her to not take home an EGOT. U suck @ the academy #Oscars.” One also wrote, “Imagine getting Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to open the oscar’s only to snub them and their film in the major categories #Oscars2025 #Oscars.”

The singer was first up for the honor in 2019 with Oscar nominations for both Best Original Song and Best Actress for her work in Harriet, but, unfortunately, she went home empty-handed that night.
Erivo, 38, earned her Emmy in 2017 for her Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program for her work in The Color Purple. Her Grammy and Tony Awards stemmed from the same production, winning Best Musical Theater Album and Best Leading Actress in a Musical, respectively.
She would have joined the likes of Elton John, Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Audrey Hepburn and Whoopi Goldberg in the exclusive club which, to date, only features 27 people, when she finally wins her Oscar.
