Toronto made its first foray into the viral trend of celebrity lookalike contests over the weekend, and an unlikely hero emerged.

Born from the now-legendary Timothee Chalamet look-alike contest which took over New York City (and the internet) earlier this fall, cities all across North America have been taking their chance to pay homage to hometown heroes and the people who look like them.

It was only a matter of time before Toronto threw its hat into the ring.

On the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 14, the scents of Le Labo Santal 33 mingled with Armani Acqua di Gio all the way down West Queen West, emanating from a charictaristically lively Apt 200, but it wasn’t the regular weekend party crowd causing the commotion — it was the Toronto Drake look-alike contest.

Organized by Toronto cake pop business, Casuals Cakery, the event sought to pay homage to the quintessential Toronto mans, while offering fellow Toronto mans(es?) the opportunity to add validity to their claims that “everyone tells them they look just like Drake.”

Funnily enough, it wasn’t a man at all who took home the top prize, which just so happened to be “10 bands” (or $10,000) donated by Drake himself.

In the end, it was Toronto woman, Makayla Chambers, who beat out scores of Drizzy impersonators with help from her show-stealing moves and pigtails, paying homage to a look the rapper rocked regularly last year.

Makayla was in good company at the contest, with dozens of fellow fans making their bid for the hefty payout, each paying tribute to various periods — eras, if you will, — in the rapper’s storied tenure.

Among the contestants, “Ozempic Drake,” “Hair Clip Drake,” and even one man who dressed as the rapper’s son, Adonis, were just some of the other fan favourites at the competition where “creativity [was] highly encouraged.”

blogTO was unable to contact Makayla at the time of publication, but suffice it to say, she’s likely reveling in her newfound icon status, not to mention her $10,000 Christmas bonus.
