One of the biggest debates during The Vampire Diaries eight-season run (a debate which continues to this day) is whether fans prefer Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) or Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), the vampire brothers at the heart of the show, and which one was the right man for Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev).
At the recent I Was Feeling Epic fanfest, a Vampire Diaries fan asked writer/producer Carina Adly Mackenzie who Taylor Swift would choose, Damon or Stefan? Mackenzie and many of the Vampire Diaries and its spinoff The Originals cast and creators are huge Swifties — they oftentimes meet up together to go to Swift concerts.
Interestingly, Mackenzie said neither because Swift is not “in her skinny vampire era” anymore.
“She’s not in her skinny vampire era. She wants to get thrown around now. I feel like it’s Taylor Kinney, I feel like it’s Uncle Mason,” said Mackenzie.
“Uncle Mason” refers to Mason Lockwood, a werewolf who appeared in seasons two and three. He was the uncle of Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino). But Trevino had other ideas about Swift’s Vampire Diaries preference, saying that he thinks Swift would play it safe with Stefan.
“I think she’s going with the safe bet of Stefan. I think she’s going with Stefan if I had to guess. But what do I know?” said Trevino.
“Disagree,” replied The Originals star Riley Voelkel, adding, “I think it’s definitely Damon. Carina, what would the song be titled?”
Mackenzie didn’t miss a beat before replying, “‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is a good Damon song.”
Fans were definitely split in the comments.
“Damon is like that one guy who we love to enjoy from a distance but when it comes to the real world Stefan is always the best choice,” wrote one fan.
Another decided that Swift “would pick Stefan but write an album about Damon 😂❤️.”
“Younger Taylor would pick Damon but nowadays she would pick Stefan,” wrote a third fan.
None of them seemed to think that Swift would pick Uncle Mason, but Mackenzie is an expert on all things Vampire Diaries and Swift, so that feels like the right answer for where Swift is in her life.
