Part of Vancouver’s allure as a city and destination for nature lovers is its dedication to growing its urban forest canopy. It’s what makes every stroll memorable and every lungful of air fresh, whether it’s on a shaded trail in the summer, a coffee run in the fall, or a cherry blossom picnic in the spring. None of it would be possible without the urban forest, and the Vancouver Park Board is offering residents the chance to help grow it.
$15 trees for sale
The annual fall tree sale is a chance for Vancouver residents to contribute to the goal of increasing city-wide canopy cover from 25 per cent to 30 per cent by 2050. The online sale includes 19 varieties of trees, including ornamental, deciduous, coniferous, and fruit trees. And all are priced at $15!
Some tree varieties are available for even less ($13.39), including sought-after trees like Japanese maples, Honeycrisp apples, magnolias, and figs. Discounted trees were selected by the Park Board’s Urban Forestry team to provide a wide range of benefits, including climate adaptability, food production, and pollinator habitat.
“We’re very happy to be bringing back the tree sale, which has always been a hit with residents,” says Vancouver Park Board Chair Laura Christensen. “We have a long history of planting and caring for trees in green spaces and parks across Vancouver, and the tree sale is a fantastic way to involve the community in helping us grow our urban forest.”
What is an urban forest?
According to the City, the urban forest includes every tree in every corner of Vancouver, from the 15,000-some trees lining neighbourhood streets to the 36,000 specimen trees in the city’s golf courses. Of course, having urban parks like Stanley Park and Pacific Spirit doesn’t hurt!
Each tree, small and large, plays a vital environmental role. Trees clean our air, capture carbon, manage rainwater, provide habitats for wildlife and birds, and improve our daily health and well-being. They also help mitigate the harmful effects of climate change, protecting the city from extreme heat and storms.
How to purchase a tree
All trees are available for purchase online from now until Sunday, Oct. 19, 2025, at which time trees can be picked up from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hillcrest Nat Bailey Stadium southern gravel parking lot.
Trees are meant to be planted on private property within the city of Vancouver to support its urban forest canopy coverage.
Note that each household can purchase up to three trees.
