Okay, full disclosure—I’ve never been one to brave the winter cold, but something about The Bentway’s Polar Bear Skate this month has me reconsidering my comfort zone.
On Dec. 29, The Bentway is bringing back the fun cold weather experience to ring in the new year.
Picture this: you, the Gardiner Expressway overhead, and a bunch of other Toronto skaters strutting their stuff on the ice in whatever minimal clothing they dare to wear. It’s like a New Year’s resolution to live boldly, except you’re doing it while skating, and before Jan 1. No big deal.
But it’s not just about daring to freeze your… well, everything. The Polar Bear Skate is also a chance to give back—yes, your bravery in the cold comes with a purpose.
While you’re out there having your full chilly experience, you can drop off some winter clothing for New Circles Community Services. A bit of generosity alongside the frostbite sounds like a perfect winter vibe to me.
If the thought of stripping down doesn’t quite do it for you (and I get it, not everyone has the inner polar bear), The Bentway’s winter programming is packed with other treats, including free skate rentals every Thursday.

From the return of ‘Free Hot Chocolate Mondays’ (because who wouldn’t want free hot chocolate?) to the new addition this year, the Resurfacing art installation by Jessica Thalmann, there are ways to add experiences to your skating moments. It’s all about the transformation of the Gardiner Expressway—something I never knew I needed to think about while gliding around an ice rink.

A full schedule of upcoming events, which kick off on Dec. 21, is on The Bentway’s official website. As for the costs of rentals, adult skates are $12, while children’s are $10, with the inclusion of a safety helmet.
