Summer 2025 is just around the corner, and it’s just a matter of time before we’re looking to beat the heat. Luckily, Alberta has a ton of lakes and pools where you can jump, swim, and splash, but few are as memorable as Discovery Canyon, a seasonal must-visit in Red Deer.
A favourite amongst locals and adventure-seekers alike, this popular destination is where visitors can bob, lounge, and cool off when temperatures climb.
Discovery Canyon
Like those before it, this summer is going to be hot, but when it starts to feel unbearable, you’ll want to be in the crowd of enthusiastic Albertans who flocked to Red Deer’s fun-filled canyon.
Here, you can lie on their beach, enjoy their wading pool, or climb aboard a tube and travel down the lazy river.
Fed naturally by the Red Deer River, this leisurely loop is gentle, refreshing, and makes for the perfect place to bring your family or friends.
The best part? Admission is actually free, although you will have to pay for your rentals and any snacks you purchase at the concession.
If, of course, you don’t want to spend the $7 for a tube, you can bring your own — just consider its size. You definitely won’t need anything too big.
Water you waiting for?
If you’re ready to jump in, you’ll have to wait until June to do so, but it’ll be well worth it. After all, there is so much more than just the water to enjoy.
While Discovery Canyon is pretty impressive in its own right, it’s just one of the many attractions that make up the Riverbend Golf and Recreation Area.
In addition to the fun park, there is also a playground, a golf course, green spaces, and a restaurant, so plan ahead.
The only downside? Unfortunately, you’ll have to leave your furry friends at home, but don’t fret — it’s only an hour and a half from both Calgary and Edmonton, so you’ll be able to get back home to them after a short drive.
For more information or to book a tee time, check out their website and start planning your perfect summer day. You’ll only have until September when it closes again for the season, so don’t hesitate.
You won’t regret checking it out. In the meantime, visit the other Alberta lakes and rivers not far from home. It might be too cold to swim right now, but you’ll be in for quite a view and a day of fresh air.
Enjoy!
