Dungeons & Dragons has officially cemented Gen Con as the premiere event during which Wizards of the Coast will announce each upcoming year’s slate of TTRPG content. During Thursday night’s D&D Vision Keynote 2027 panel hosted by Baldur’s Gate 3’s Theo Solomon, D&D designers and leadership talked about new releases for the game, including updates on new books, digital tools, video games, and collaborations for the next year and more.
Some announcements fill gaps in D&D’s previously announced lineup, including a renewed commitment to publishing full-length adventures. Others revive beloved campaign settings that have gone unsupported for years. The biggest reveal establishes an entire program dedicated to prominent crossovers, starting with a fittingly epic tabletop adaptation of a popular fantasy video game.
Here are the nine biggest D&D announcements from Gen Con 2026.
D&D Icons reunites the game’s most influential creators
Wizards of the Coast is bringing some of D&D’s foundational creators back into the fold through a new initiative called D&D Icons.
“The goal is to bring together legendary creators with the current design team to help shape future content,” franchise creative director Kara Kenna said during a presentation ahead of Gen Con, describing it as “a new initiative that brings together some of the most iconic and influential creators in D&D’s history to work on new stories from their unique voice.”
Joe Manganiello will serve as chief creative officer of the initiative, which begins with three pillars of D&D history. Dragonlance creators Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are also involved, as is R.A. Salvatore, author of the Legend of Drizzt novels.
The program’s first collaborator is Luke Gygax, who will contribute to upcoming Greyhawk material, which includes content drawn from unpublished notes left by his father, D&D co-creator Gary Gygax. “This is just the beginning of this exciting program,” Kenna said. “Who knows who we might bring to the table?”
Third-party studios will make official D&D adventures
D&D has accumulated dozens of campaign settings over its five-decade history, but maintaining all of them has proven impossible for Wizards’ internal team, which will often focus on settings like the Forgotten Realms while others, ironically, remain mostly forgotten. Wizards will enlist prominent third-party publishers to make official D&D books.
“Players shouldn’t have to wait decades before we go back to an Eberron or a Ravenloft or a Dark Sun,” executive producer Greg Bilsland said. “We should be making it easier for everybody to run adventures.”
The first of these partnerships will produce an official Ravenloft book from Ghostfire Gaming in 2027 that incorporates the Domains of Dread recently featured in Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. An Eberron adventure featuring the Lord of Blades will follow in 2028 from Visionary Productions, while Kobold Press will develop new Forgotten Realms material.
These won’t be lightly affiliated supplements published through the Dungeon Masters Guild, which has been the case for quite some time with similar products. They will be official physical and digital D&D releases sold through Wizards of the Coast’s normal distribution channels.
“A big piece of what we’re trying to do here is provide annual support for every one of our settings,” Bilsland said. The exact format may vary between a singular campaign and an adventure anthology, but Wizards’ goal is to provide one major adventure for each supported setting every year in some capacity.
D&D Beyond is getting a major overhaul
Finding a reliable D&D group remains one of the biggest obstacles to actually playing the game. Wizards is trying to address that problem with a new looking-for-group hub at dndbeyond.com/lfg.
“If you’re having a hard time finding people to play with, this is your hub,” senior manager of brand publicity and communications Blain Howard said.
The hub will initially offer three ways to find a game: a worldwide event finder will surface games posted by participating Wizards Play Network stores, a partnership with professional game platform StartPlaying will offer new D&D players their first session for 99 cents for a limited time, and D&D’s official new Discord server will add a dedicated LFG channel.
D&D Beyond itself will receive a rebuilt search function alongside new Dungeon Master preparation tools, including a scene manager, map pins, bookmarks, and encounter-management features that don’t require opening Maps or another virtual tabletop.
The core objective is to make D&D Beyond more useful before and during a session, even for groups that primarily play face-to-face.
“The magical ingredient that makes D&D and tabletop role-playing games so good for us are your fellow adventurers around the table,” Howard said. “But it feels harder than it’s ever been in our lives to just get people together.”
A rebuilt D&D Beyond mobile app launches in 2027
The aforementioned improvements extend into an overhauled version of the D&D Beyond app that’s designed specifically for players sitting around the same physical table.
Most VTTs command an entire party’s full attention, but Wizards says its new app should do the opposite. “The tech at your table should reduce your distractions and keep you present,” Howard said. “We don’t want your phone to copy or replace any part of your tabletop experience, from the books, to the minis, to the snacks.”
The new experience is built upon a rules engine that Wizards has spent nearly two years developing. Its eventual goal is to understand and automate the intricacies of D&D’s rules, speeding up the administrative parts of play without overtaking the session.
A very early version will arrive in 2027, with Wizards planning to iterate upon it and introduce additional features throughout the year.
Warlock reveals its patron and principal voice actors
When Invoke Studios revealed its third-person action game Warlock at The Game Awards in December 2025, it left some important questions unanswered. If protagonist Kaatri has made a pact with some entity to wield otherworldly magic, what kind of Warlock is she? Who is her patron? In D&D, these answers define a Warlock’s subclass, which determines what specific powers they have.
While the D&D team stopped short of assigning Kaatri a subclass (or Pact), they did confirm that her patron is Tasha, who is also known as the archfey Zybilna or Iggwilv the Witch-Queen. First created by Gary Gygax in the Greyhawk setting, Tasha was a human raised by primordial witch Baby Yaga who went on to become one of the most powerful mages in the entire multiverse. This probably means that Kaatri has The Archfey pact as her subclass, though since Warlock is billed as an action-adventure game, it’s not likely that the game will adapt D&D mechanics cleanly.
Battlestar Galactica star Tricia Helfer will voice Kaatri, with Maggie Robertson — best known for playing Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village — as the voice of Tasha. Warlock’s first gameplay footage will debut at Gamescom 2026.
Arcana Unleashed includes a full campaign for levels 11 to 20
Scheduled for release on Sept. 15, Arcana Unleashed is D&D’s major expansion for its Season of Magic, adding options themed around the game’s eight schools of magic. It will include eight subclasses (two of them brand new), 10 new backgrounds, 29 feats, 33 spells, six magical group patrons, nine magical factions, 47 magic items, new rules for evolving magic items, and 19 magical creatures with a short adventure at the end of the book for first level characters.
A companion book, Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall, is far more substantial than the “companion product” label might suggest. Deadfall is a complete campaign for characters from levels 11 through 20, a range of play that official D&D adventures rarely support.
Senior designer Amanda Hamon described it as the “dark reflection” of Arcana Unleashed’s colorful magical fantasy. The campaign sends players into Thay on an espionage mission targeting Szass Tam, the lich ruler who intends to empower his undead armies with demonic forces.
“The player characters are Thay’s only hope,” Hamon said. “They’re recruited into a magical espionage campaign to undermine and eventually confront Szass Tam.”
Deadfall also contains an extensive gazetteer of Thay, a deep dive into the Red Wizards and their territories, 14 magic items, and six new stat blocks for friends and foes, including Szass Tam himself.
Greyhawk returns in Crown of the Witch Queen
Greyhawk will receive its first major adventure for the current edition of D&D in late 2027.
Greyhawk: Crown of the Witch Queen is a 160-page campaign centered on Drelnza, the vampiric daughter of Tasha (aka Iggwilv or Zybilna) who is herself the titular Witch Queen. (Yes, that means Wizards of the Coast is releasing both a video game and sourcebook in 2027 with a major focus on Tasha!)
Wizards describes Crown of the Witch Queen as a villain-focused story with an “operatic, thrilling, and archetypal” visual style. “We’re going for big, dramatic silhouettes and bold, impactful shapes that feel like classic Greyhawk, but reimagined and updated for today,” product architect Andy Chilton said.
The adventure will receive physical and digital releases alongside a Greyhawk map pack and Dungeon Master screen. It also represents the first campaign setting supported by D&D Icons, meaning Luke Gygax’s contributions and Gary Gygax’s unpublished notes could help shape the wider return to the world.
An M-rated Dark Sun defines D&D’s Season of Survival
Dark Sun is officially returning, and Wizards isn’t sanitizing the grim and grisly campaign setting for modern D&D.
Dark Sun will become D&D’s first mature-rated setting. Its books will be labeled for players 18 and older and sold shrink-wrapped because of content including bloodshed, nudity, and sexuality.
“Athas isn’t the world you save. It is the world you survive,” Bilsland said. “It is a brutal place where survival is its own act of defiance.”
Dark Sun will anchor D&D’s Season of Survival, which begins in February 2027. The product line spans nearly 500 pages across Blood and Power, a player-facing expansion; Edge of Oblivion, a campaign setting guide for Dungeon Masters; and a limited-edition Player’s Handbook featuring alternate Dark Sun artwork. A map pack and Dungeon Master screen will accompany the books.
The release will also formally introduce the Psion as D&D’s second new class for 5th Edition.
“It’s both,” Bilsland said when asked whether Dark Sun’s adult content was mechanical or narrative. “We have narrative elements and campaign arcs, as well as mechanical options that add a level of brutality to it.”
Dark Sun includes optional mechanics that make its combat more brutal, including decapitation rules. Wizards will also provide guidance for groups to determine how much mature material they want in their campaigns.
Wizards believes the audience for mature fantasy has expanded considerably since Dark Sun’s last major tabletop incarnation. Bilsland specifically cited Game of Thrones and The Witcher as franchises that have changed what fantasy audiences expect.
“There was a strong indication from people that they wanted this,” he said. “We talked to them, we listened to them, and Dark Sun just made a natural fit for the kind of content and stories that we want to tell that are more mature.”
World of Warcraft launches D&D’s Universes Beyond program
Dungeons & Dragons is borrowing one of Magic: The Gathering’s most successful and controversial ideas. Universes Beyond, the program that brings outside franchises into Magic for lucrative crossovers, is expanding into D&D. The first, which leaked earlier this month, is a full World of Warcraft campaign setting.
“Universes Beyond is D&D’s opportunity to bring incredible, handpicked collaborations to our world of collaborative storytelling,” creative leader Laura Hohman said. “These collaborations are authentic love letters to fans.”
The 256-page Dungeons & Dragons x World of Warcraft book launches Nov. 17, with early access beginning Nov. 3. It contains rules for 11 new species, covering every playable World of Warcraft race and several variants, plus nine subclasses that allow players to adapt classic D&D classes into World of Warcraft classes.
The book also includes 26 magic items, 60 spells, 23 factions, 50 monsters, seven dungeons, and 30 dungeon boss stat blocks. Rules for professions, mounts, and companion creatures dig even deeper into adapting World of Warcraft mechanics for tabletop play.
“It’s a 256-page book, so the answer is a lot,” principal game designer James Wyatt said. A separate map pack grants access to a digital Icecrown Citadel adventure that takes five level 16 characters through level 20, culminating in a battle against Arthas, the Lich King. Hasbro will also release miniatures featuring Arthas and Illidan.
This is more than a one-off collaboration. World of Warcraft establishes Universes Beyond as an ongoing D&D product line, although Wizards says it intends to carefully balance outside franchises against original D&D worlds.
Wyatt, who has played World of Warcraft since close to its launch, called the book “an awesome opportunity for fans of World of Warcraft and of D&D to explore Azeroth in a whole new way.” And unlike the massively multiplayer game, tabletop players aren’t limited by programmed dialogue or invisible walls.
“You can interact with anything you can see,” Wyatt said. “You can talk to anybody you meet.”
Star Wars is coming to Dungeons & Dragons
The biggest reveal of the night during D&D’s Gen Con panel happened when Darth Vader took the stage. While virtually no details have been revealed about D&D’s second Universes Beyond release ever, it’s confirmed that the focus will be on Star Wars during the upcoming Season of Rebellion. That’s currently slated for the back half of 2027.
