10 Costco Brands That Are Secretly Made By Major Brands

17 July 20267 Mins Read

Stepping into a Costco warehouse can feel like a treasure hunt, but some of the biggest prizes aren’t hiding in the middle aisles—they’re sitting right in plain sight on the grocery shelves.

If you’ve ever hesitated to add a Kirkland Signature item to your cart because you were worried about sacrificing quality for a lower price, it’s really time to let that worry go.

The big secret of the retail world is that Costco doesn’t actually own factories to manufacture its massive house brand. Instead, the warehouse giant teams up with the biggest, most prestigious national and international names in the food industry.

By using the existing supply chains of luxury brands, premium cheese cooperatives and legendary food manufacturers, Costco is able to wrap top-tier products in its iconic black-and-red Kirkland Signature packaging.

For shoppers, this means you’re often getting products made by some of the biggest names in the business without paying name-brand prices. From pantry staples and premium dairy products to kitchen essentials, these Kirkland finds deliver impressive quality at warehouse prices.

We did the digging to uncover the major brands behind some of Costco’s most popular Kirkland food and drink products. Here are the names hiding behind your favorite warehouse staples.

Costco Brands Made by Major Brands

These 10 Kirkland favorites are made by some of the biggest names in the food industry.

1. Kirkland Signature Reynolds Foodservice Foil

This isn’t just generic foil. It’s explicitly co-branded. If you look closely at the massive blue box in the aisle, you will see the Reynolds logo printed right on the packaging, revealing the major brand behind Costco’s private-label product.

The secret here isn’t the manufacturer, but the grade of the product. This is foodservice foil—the heavy-duty, tear-resistant stuff used in professional kitchens, which is not commonly sold in standard grocery stores.

One box contains 1,000 square feet of foil. For the average home cook, a single box can literally last years, making it one of the best value-for-money items in the entire warehouse.

2. Kirkland Signature Super Premium Vanilla Ice Cream

This Costco ice cream has a cult following for a reason. Humboldt Creamery, a historic California-based dairy, has long been identified as the producer of this Super Premium treat.

The Super Premium label typically refers to ice cream made with higher butterfat and lower overrun (added air), which gives it that denser, richer texture.

It regularly beats major luxury brands in blind taste tests because of its incredible density. At a lower price than many premium competitors, it’s widely considered the best vanilla ice cream on the market, period.

3. Kirkland Signature Parmigiano Reggiano

You don’t have to guess with this one—just flip the wedge over. The label on the back (or the stamp on the rind of the full wheels) identifies Zanetti SPA as the supplier. Zanetti is one of the largest and most respected exporters of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano in Italy.

This is the real deal, aged for more than 24 months and imported directly from Italy. Costco sells authentic Parmigiano Reggiano at a price that’s hard to beat, especially compared with similarly aged wedges at many grocery and specialty stores.

4. Kirkland Signature Tortilla Strips

While the packaging has evolved over the years, eagle-eyed shoppers know the truth. For a long time, these bags of tortilla strips were explicitly labeled “Manufactured by Mission Foods,” and Costco Business Centers still list co-branded “Mission/Kirkland Signature” tortilla strips in their inventory systems.

These chips are known for being thicker and sturdier than standard store brands, making them engineered perfectly for scooping up heavy guacamole or salsa without snapping in half.

5. Kirkland Signature Grass-Fed Butter

While many shoppers assume this rich, vibrant yellow butter is a clone of Ireland’s famous Kerrygold, it actually comes from the other side of the world.

It’s produced by Westland Milk Products, one of New Zealand’s largest and most historic dairy cooperatives. New Zealand’s pasture-based dairy system gives the butter its naturally high beta-carotene levels and ultra-creamy texture.

It offers the exact same high-fat, rich, artisanal taste of luxury European-style imported butters, but sells for a fraction of the cost per pound.

6. Kirkland Signature Imported Brie

Costco isn’t cutting corners with its French brie. Look closely at the round wooden wheel box for the Kirkland Signature Brie—it proudly bears the name and seal of Isigny Sainte-Mère. This is an incredibly prestigious, independent Normandy-based dairy cooperative renowned worldwide for its ultra-premium butter and cream.

Serving an authentic French co-op cheese at a party makes you look like a gourmet cheesemonger, but buying it at Costco keeps your hosting budget completely intact.

7. Kirkland Signature Milk Chocolate Almonds

Ever wonder why those giant tubs of chocolate-covered nuts in the snack aisle taste so much richer than standard drugstore candy?

They’re manufactured by Blommer Chocolate Company, the largest cocoa processor in North America. Operating since 1939, Blommer supplies the high-end industrial chocolate used by premium bakers and confectioners across the continent.

It’s another example of Costco partnering with an established manufacturer to deliver name-brand quality at a warehouse price.

8. Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon

If you’ve ever bought premium, deli-grade smoked salmon at a high-end grocery store, you’ve likely seen Acme Smoked Fish in its signature blue packaging. The Brooklyn-based legendary seafood smoking company, which supplies New York bagel shops, is the producer behind Costco’s sleek, black-packaged Kirkland alternative.

This Costco find is an easy way to upgrade brunch without overspending. You’re getting cold-smoked, premium Atlantic salmon from the same historic supplier behind Acme’s own products, just without paying luxury boutique prices.

9. Kirkland Signature Extra Virgin Italian Olive Oil

Costco’s premium Italian olive oil isn’t a mysterious corporate blend. The bottles carry strict P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin) seals, tracing the product directly to small family estates in the Puglia region of southern Italy (the “heel” of Italy’s boot). They’re crafted predominantly from Coratina and Cima di Bitonto olives.

Kirkland olive oil has earned praise from chefs like Samin Nosrat for its quality and value. Its P.D.O. certification also provides traceability, a feature many shoppers appreciate in a category that has faced authenticity concerns over the years.

10. Kirkland Signature Kettle Brand Potato Chips

This is another example of a partnership that Costco proudly puts right on the front label, but many shoppers gloss right over it. The massive bags of Kirkland Signature Krinkle Cut Himalayan Salt Potato Chips are co-branded directly with Kettle Brand.

Kettle Brand is legendary for its extra-crunchy, batch-cooked potato chips. The Kirkland version delivers that identical, premium texture and thick-cut ridge style in a bag large enough to feed an entire backyard barbecue.

Final Thoughts

The next time you’re shopping at Costco, it pays to look a little closer. While not every Kirkland product comes from a recognizable manufacturer, plenty of them do—and knowing who’s behind them can make you feel even better about tossing them in your cart.

After all, getting products from trusted brands at Costco prices is one of the reasons so many shoppers keep coming back.
