When you need a jolt of energy in the morning, you likely reach for your favorite caffeinated beverage. Whether coffee or tea is your preferred drink, you know it’ll do the trick and leave you feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, as a popular saying goes.
If you’re actually seeking bright eyes, caffeine can also work wonders when used in skincare products, particularly eye creams. Not familiar with this brilliant skincare trick? That’s OK, because we consulted dermatologists to get their picks for the 11 best caffeine eye creams that actually combat puffiness and dark circles.
But first, we wanted to understand what causes these two beauty concerns in the first place. As it turns out, there are a number of possible reasons.
“Puffy eyes and dark circles are usually caused by a combination of aging, genetics, fluid retention, allergies, irritation and lifestyle factors, including lack of sleep, irritating cosmetics and high-salt diets,” Dr. Jodi Logerfo, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, DCNP, tells Parade.
Logerfo, who specializes in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, says the tissues and ligaments around the eyes weaken as we age.
“Fat pads can shift and the lower eyelid may lose support, creating the appearance of under-eye bags or puffiness,” she explains.

How Does Caffeine Help With Puffiness and Dark Circles?
Dr. Mona Foad, a board-certified dermatologist and the founder of MONA Dermatology, says eye creams often contain caffeine because it can temporarily constrict blood vessels and reduce fluid buildup under the eyes.
“This can make puffiness appear less noticeable and may improve the appearance of certain types of dark circles, particularly those with a vascular or bluish component,” she tells Parade. “While caffeine can provide visible improvement, it’s important to remember that not all dark circles are caused by the same factors, so results can vary from person to person.”

What Percentage of Caffeine Should You Look for in an Eye Cream?
Unfortunately, Foad says most brands don’t reveal the exact percentage of caffeine in their eye creams. Moreover, there’s no magic number to look for.
“In general, I encourage patients to focus less on the percentage and more on the overall formulation. The ingredients that accompany caffeine and the product’s ability to be tolerated consistently are often more important than a specific number on the label,” she explains.
How Long Does It Take for Caffeine Eye Cream To Work?
In the world of skincare, there are no miracle cures, but caffeine is an ingredient that works quicker than most.
“Some patients may notice an improvement in puffiness relatively quickly, sometimes within hours of application. However, concerns like dark circles, fine lines and overall skin quality typically require more consistent use over several weeks. Like most skincare products, the best results come from regular, long-term use rather than expecting an immediate transformation,” Foad says.

How To Apply Eye Cream Correctly
Sometimes, applying a product incorrectly can spoil the results you could have seen with proper usage. For that reason, it’s best to follow the pros’ tips below before applying eye cream.
- Watch your pressure: Foad recommends applying eye cream gently using your ring finger. Logerfo agrees, saying, “Gently dab the product along the orbital bone (under the eyes and around the outer corners), avoiding rubbing or pulling the skin.”
- Less is more: “One of the biggest mistakes people make with eye cream is applying too much product or putting it too close to the lash line. This can cause irritation and dryness and even allow the product to go into the eyes. I recommend applying a dot of eye cream (like a piece of rice) along the orbital bone with gentle pressure and patting it in,” Logerfo says.
- Beware of harsh ingredients: “Another common mistake is using an eye cream that is too strong for the delicate skin around the eyes. Fragrances, harsh active ingredients or products that aren’t formulated for the eye area can trigger irritation, redness, swelling or allergic reactions,” Logerfo says.
- Stay consistent: “Use it morning and/or night after cleansing the skin, and allow it to absorb before applying other products or makeup,” Logerfo says.
What Other Ingredients Work Well With Caffeine in Eye Cream?
Certain ingredients simply make each other better. In caffeine’s case, the ingredient typically plays well with hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants and niacinamide.
“Hyaluronic acid helps improve hydration, peptides can support collagen production and antioxidants help protect against environmental damage. I generally look for formulations that address multiple concerns at once since puffiness, dark circles, dehydration and fine lines often occur together,” Foad tells Parade.
