11 of the best things to do in and around Edmonton this week (May 20-23)

18 May 20254 Mins Read

Ah, yes, that sweet short-week energy. With the long weekend behind us, it’s time to coast through the days with some fun plans, local flair, and a few surprises sprinkled in. Whether you’re craving a coffee-fueled evening, a dose of local theatre, or a mini road trip for festival vibes, there’s no end to the things to do in Edmonton.

Kick off your week with fresh, local storytelling at Walterdale Theatre’s annual new play fest. The fest features six plays by emerging playwrights and directors. Meaning you can catch bold new theatre in its rawest form. Plus, it’s super affordable.

When: Tuesday, May 20 to Sunday, May 25; (See schedule above)
Where: Walterdale Theatre – 10322 83rd Ave. NW
Cost: $11 to $26

Juno winner Alessia Cara is hitting the Jubilee stage this Wednesday as part of her Love & Hyperbole Tour. Expect a night packed with soulful vocals, honest lyrics, and all the fan-fave tracks. Think “Here,” “Growing Pains,” and whatever new anthem she’s got up her sleeve.

When: Wednesday, May 21, 8 p.m.
Where: Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium – 11455 87th Ave.
Cost: $29 to $111+

Coffee nerds, this one’s for you. Alternate Route is hosting a guided tasting session featuring some of its best beans and brewing methods. It’s a chill, educational experience—plus you’ll probably leave with a new favourite roast.

When: Wednesday, May 21; 5:30 p.m.
Where: Alternate Route Coffee Co. – 3655 44th Ave. E
Cost: $40.72

The Inspire Fashion Show is back. And it’s bringing the drip (and the heart) with local designers, retailers, and community creators hitting the runway in style. It’s part fashion, part fundraiser, and all-around fabulous. Best part? Tickets are only $5!

When: Thursday, May 22; 5 to 7:30 p.m.
Where: Kingsway Mall – 109th Street & Kingsway
Cost: $5

Trust Telus Science Centre to make all things dope. And they’re at it yet again, this time with an adult-only, science-meets-party scene. Expect music, drinks, hands-on exhibits, and brainy fun, all with a trippy twist.

Heads up: this event does sell out.

When: Thursday, May 22; 6:30 to 10 p.m.
Where: Telus World of Science — 11211 142nd St. NW
Cost: $34.60

Edmonton and its sister city, Harbin, are back with a fun, culture-packed party. And you’re invited. Expect live music, cultural showcases, kid-friendly activities, and dumpling-making demos to round things out. The star of the show, however, is the massive, immersive balloon art exhibition.

When: Thursday, May 22 to Saturday, May 24; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Where: Mill Woods Town Centre – 2331 66th St. NW
Cost: Free

Local beer + vintage streetcar + skyline views = our fave Thursday night plan. The Common is back with its Street Car Cask series. Starting this week, every Thursday, you can sip on unique cask creations from local breweries while riding across the High Level Bridge.

When: Thursday, May 22 to Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025 (see schedule above)
Where: High Level Bridge Street Car – 10910 100th Ave. NW
Cost: $63.10

The carnival might have left Edmonton, but you certainly don’t have to give up on it just yet. Head to Beaumont for a full-on small-town fair experience. Think midway rides, pancake breakfasts, beer gardens, and fireworks. It’s perfect for anyone craving a little weekend nostalgia.

When: Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25; (See schedule above)
Where: Beaumont Sport and Recreation Centre – 5001 Rue Eaglemont
Cost: $1 to $50

St. Albert’s biggest bash is back for its 60th year. Gear up for three days of rodeo action, midway thrills, live music, and community vibes at Riel Park. From pancake breakfasts and parades to pig races and concerts, it’s going to be a banger of a celebration.

When: Friday, May 23 – Sunday, May 25; (See schedule above)
Where: 47 Riel Dr., St. Albert
Cost: $7.62 to $66.67

Listen-up theatre junkies and anyone who appreciates good entertainment! This Tony-winning musical is equal parts hilarious and outrageous. It follows one man’s comedic murderous path to nobility, with sharp wit, snappy tunes, and costume changes galore.

When: Friday, May 23 to Sunday, June 1; (See timings above)
Where: Orange Hub Performance Theatre – 10045 156th St., NW
Cost: $51 to $77

One of Edmonton’s fave outdoor markets is back for another season! Every Thursday, browse local goods, enjoy food trucks, and catch live entertainment on 124 Street. It’s dog-friendly, stroller-friendly, and vibe-approved.

When: Every Thursday until Oct. 9, 4 to 8 p.m.
Where: 108th & 124th Street
Cost: $18.18

Here’s to short weeks with big energy!
