15 Photos of Pizza Hut in the '90s That Will Unlock a Core Memory

16 February 20266 Mins Read

Growing up in the ’90s was an experience you just had to be there for. Cartoons were at their peak, Blockbuster was king, and our wildest dream was to someday end up as a cast member on All That! We were obsessed with Britney Spears and ‘N Sync, and MTV was at the top of its game.

Sadly, most of those things are no more, and for us kids of the ’90s, that means we’re left with nothing but feelings of nostalgia for an era lost to time. But as much as there’s so much we miss about the ’90s, the one thing we’ll always wish we could have back is Pizza Hut in its prime.

Pizza Hut, during the late ’80s and ’90s, was magical. It was a red-roofed, checkered palace that served arguably the best pizza you could find outside an authentic Italian restaurant. It was a vibe, and honestly, no one else has been able to capture the same aesthetic since.

Although we might not be able to revisit Pizza Hut in its glory days, we can always reminisce about what was, and, lucky for you, we have photographic evidence of what the chain looked like in its heyday. Read on to see 15 photos of Pizza Hut in the ’90s that’ll open up a brain file you thought was closed for good.

15 Photos of Pizza Hut in the ’90s That You Can’t Forget

1. Those Instantly Recognizable Chandeliers and Checkered Tablecloths

Although it isn’t as common these days, Pizza Hut used to offer a full blown dine-in experience complete with servers and weekly menu specials. The decor was a mix of classic pizza parlor and reimagined “New Americana” that is forever seared into our brains.

2. When You Got Free Pizza for Hitting Your Monthly Reading Goals

Not only was Pizza Hut invested in delivering the best pizza, but it was also invested in encouraging young readers to hit their goals. The brand first launched the Book It! Program in 1984, which allowed readers to exchange read books for free pizza.

3. The Wild and Wacky Antics of Pizza Head

Pizza Head is kind of a deep cut, but IYKYK. This hilarious character was first introduced in the early ’90s with a slate of commercials that you can find on YouTube.

4. The Classic Red Roof and Original Logo

The iconic Pizza Hut red roof became the brand’s identifier that you could spot from miles away. Even without seeing the sign, you knew that pizza was right around the corner. Today, there are only a handful of locations that still have the old school aesthetic, but if you can find them, it’s like stepping into a time machine.

5. Pizza Hut Ads Showing Up in Unexpected Places

Pizza Hut was a marketing machine in its glory days with ads showing up everywhere from billboards and commercials to comic books. This ad from an X-Men comic was strategically placed in the middle to stop readers in their tracks.

6. This Pizza Hut Menu From 1996

This menu from 1996 is a far cry from the glossy, digitized menus we’re used to seeing today. On the bright side, price-wise, Pizza Hut prices haven’t changed all that much, save for a few dollars here and there. You’ve got to love a great value!

7. When Pizza Hut Invented Stuffed Crust and Everyone (Yes, You) Ate It Backwards

If the internet had been around, Pizza Hut’s invention of stuffed-crust pizza would’ve broken it. Fun fact: the brand announced the game-changing invention with the help of Donald Trump and made a cheeky reference to his divorce at the same time. You can watch the full ad on YouTube.

8. Those Iconic Red Cups You Got When Dining In

No Pizza Hut dine-in experience was complete without these iconic red cups, and yes, one or two managed to find their way home with us.

9. The Famous All-You-Can-Eat Buffet

Beyond the aesthetic, the thing we miss most about Pizza Hut is the glorious buffet filled with pizza as far as the eye could see. We almost always ate more than we needed to. Cici’s could never.

10. And Equally Famous Salad Bar

In addition to pizza, OG Pizza Hut also had a salad bar filled with more vegetables than we’ve ever seen in our lifetime. It just isn’t the same these days.

11. When Pizza Hut Had ‘Atmosphere’

You can almost smell the parmesan and oregano in this picture. The server’s uniform, the checkered curtains, the overall carefree vibe—it was truly bliss.

12. Pizza Hut Used to Give Out the Best Toys

Like many other restaurant chains, Pizza Hut in the ’90s gave away some of the best toys with its kids’ meals. Notably, the Land Before Time toys were puppets that you could collect with each meal.

13. When You Could Get Free Video Game Demos with Your Purchase

Closer to the end of the ’90s, Pizza Hut started giving away free game demos with orders that included ads for upcoming games and up to six demos you could play to promote ones that had just come out. The partnership made for plenty of legendary game nights.

14. Ordering Pizza Through PizzaNet, the World’s First Online Food Ordering System

True to its form in the ’90s, Pizza Hut pushed the boundaries of service even further and launched PizzaNet, the first online ordering platform for food. The first food order ever sold online was a large pepperoni, mushroom and extra-cheese pizza.

15. The TripleDeckeroni, Better Known as Pizza-ception

The TripleDeckeroni might sound like a fever dream induced by eating too much pepperoni, but it was very much real. This indulgent pizza was made with two layers of thin crust, topped with a six-cheese blend and 90 (yes, 90) pepperoni slices.
