In 1963, Jesse Fuller, a one-man band, wrote and released his first version of the folk song, “You’re No Good.” The song was included on Fuller’s album, San Francisco Bay Blues. The song follows the narrator’s tumultuous relationship with a woman who initially takes care of him, but then begins to show her affections to another man, making the singer want to “lay down and die.”
Rock Icon Bob Dylan was familiar with Fuller’s work and actually learned “You’re No Good” from him personally. At Dylan’s initial recording sessions for his eponymous debut album, the song became the first he worked on and recorded for the record. Dylan went on to record eight different versions of the track, playing with different intros and trying to find the balance of the tune. The final version ended up being faster than Fuller’s original, with Dylan’s own spin on some of the lyrics.
Dylan did, however, end up crediting Fuller in the liner notes for “You’re No Good,” saying, “[I] learned [the song] from Jesse Fuller the West Coast blues singer.”
Despite being somewhat of a signature of his debut into the industry, some feel that “You’re No Good” doesn’t get the love it deserves. In a 2021 ranking for Rolling Stone, “You’re No Good” was placed among the 20 “most overlooked” songs of Dylan’s career. Writer Rob Sheffield said of the track:
“From his oft-overlooked folkie debut, a prophetic blast of rockabilly. Even in this early stage, hustling to make his name in the folk scene, Dylan’s got rock & roll in his bones.”
Looking back on the initial reception of the song, this actually matches what critics thought at the time. The track was somewhat nonsensical, but music critic Paul Williams pointed out this was one of the only songs on Dylan’s debut album that pointed towards him being a rock star.
And a rock star he became. Now known as one of the best songwriters and musicians of our time, it’s clear that no matter his start, Bob Dylan will remain a staple in rock music for generations.
