1963 Hit by Dave Dudley, Never a No. 1, Became One of the ‘Greatest Country Songs of All Time’

Sixty-three years ago, country star Dave Dudley released “Six Days on the Road,” and despite never topping any Billboard charts, it has gone down in history as one of the defining hits of the country genre.

Released in May 1963 as the lead single from his debut album, Songs About the Working Man, “Six Days on the Road” became a breakthrough success. Upon its arrival, the track climbed up both the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot Country Singles charts, peaking at No. 32 and No. 2, respectively.

Despite never leading either chart, the song experienced significant commercial triumph. Since its release, the track has moved over 1 million copies, earning a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). At the height of its 1963 popularity, it sold thousands of units daily.

Written by Earl Green and Carl Montgomery, “Six Days on the Road” tells the story of a hard-working truck driver racing home to see his family after a week on the highway. The track explores themes of life on the road and long-distance relationships, connecting deeply with working-class audiences.

In 2003, Dudley famously summarized his life and on-the-road anthem with this sentiment: “It’s not the years, so much; it’s the mileage that’ll kill ya.” Today, that quote holds up alongside the song, which is regularly ranked among country music’s most notable works.

In 2024, Rolling Stone ranked their picks for the 200 best country songs of all time, compiling a list of the greatest works in the genre. Ranked among classics like David Allan Coe’s 1975 hit “You Never Even Called Me by My Name” at No. 160 and The Mavericks’ 1995 song “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” at No. 159, Dudley’s single came in at No. 161—attesting to its lasting critical acclaim.

Over six decades after its release, “Six Days on the Road” has maintained a dedicated fan base, bridging the gap between generations in the digital era. On Spotify, the track has racked up over 32 million streams across its different renditions.
