1966 Signature Breakup Song Became One of the Songwriter’s Most Critically Acclaimed Works

While vacationing in the Swiss Alps with his then-girlfriend, musician and bassist Paul McCartneysnuck away to a bathroom to write the song “For No One.” McCartney talked in his 2021 book about how the song was about rejection, saying, “I’m talking about two people who’ve broken up, but obviously, as with any writer, it all comes from your own experience, and inevitably you’re talking about yourself.”

“For No One” was recorded over the course of three different days in May of 1966 fairly simplistically. McCartney sang and played a rented clavichord, while Ringo Starr played the drums, tambourine, and maracas. Neither John Lennon nor George Harrison contributed to the track.

The song contains a French horn solo which was performed by Alan Civil. Civil became one of the few session musicians to be credited on a Beatles album.

“For No One” was included on the 1966 album Revolver. The song was not released as a single.

After the release of the Revolver album, critics specifically honed in on “For No One” and lauded McCartney’s songwriting on the song. The Evening Standardcalled the song “as moving as ‘Yesterday'” and Rolling Stonecalled it the “ultimate ‘you stay home, she goes out’ break-up song.”

All Musicwrote that “For No One” is “one of Paul McCartney’s great ballads with the Beatles” and it is “one of the most inspired of the singer’s whole career.”

Singer-songwriter Elvis Costello named “For No One” as his favorite song in The Beatles’ catalog. He cited the lyrics and the musical arrangement as being particuarly noteworthy and also said of the song that, “It’s about as perfect a record as you could make.”

Another notable fan of “For No One” was Lennon, who called the song one of his favorites by McCartney and “a nice piece of work.”
