1971 Dolly Parton 'Story Song', Written in Just Minutes on a Tour Bus, Is Her Favorite of All 3,000 She's Ever Written–Here's Why

Dolly Parton‘s written more than 3,000 songs. She says “Coat of Many Colors” is her favorite of all of them. The 1971 song was written in minutes on the back of a dry-cleaning receipt for one of Porter Wagoner‘s rhinestone stage suits while she was riding his tour bus. It went to No. 4 on the Billboard Country chart. It’s now in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress. Whenever she sings it, she says she sees her whole childhood.

In 1969, Dolly was riding Porter Wagoner’s tour bus. Wagoner was famous across Nashville for his rhinestone-clad Nudie suits, handcrafted by designer Nudie Cohn, who also designed rhinestone costumes for Elvis Presley and Hank Williams.A song came to her, and she needed paper. The only paper available was a dry-cleaning receipt from one of his designer suits. She grabbed it and started writing.

The receipt from the most expensive suit in country music became the paper that held country music’s most beloved song about poverty. The irony writes itself. Wagoner loved what she’d written so much he had the receipt framed. It now hangs in Dolly’s Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood alongside a duplicate of the coat her mother made and the original handwritten lyrics.

The song’s a story song, which is Dolly’s own description of her favorite way to write. What it tells on the surface is this. One winter Dolly needed a coat. Her mother was given a box of rags and sewed them into a patchwork coat, telling Dolly the Bible story of Joseph as she worked.

Dolly ran to school proud of what her mother had made. What happened next she couldn’t talk about for years. The other children pulled at the coat until the buttons fell off, locking her screaming in a dark coat closet. She still sleeps with a light on because of it. “That memory had been painful to me,” she said, “but I didn’t realize it until I wrote the story.” People wrote to her saying it had healing properties. “It was a story of acceptance and hope.”

The photograph on the album cover was taken the same day. It was picture day at school. When the photographer took her picture, she was crying. She smiled anyway because she wanted her picture made so badly. She was still wearing the coat.

Dolly started writing songs at five. Her father recalled she was writing them before she knew how to hold a pencil. More than 3,000 have followed. She writes them to keep memories alive. “Love and my family and writing about those days keeps me sane in an insane world.” Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, died in March 2025. The woman who writes songs to keep memories alive has new reasons to sing this one.

The Song That Healed What She Couldn’t Say Out Loud

“Coat of Many Colors” is in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress. Dolly published the lyrics as a children’s book in 1996. The NBC TV movie in December 2015 drew nearly 16 million viewers. Shania Twain, Emmylou Harris and Eva Cassidy have all recorded their own versions. In April 2026, she launched the Kendra Scott x Dolly Parton Coat of Many Colors jewelry collection.

And buried in the gatefold of her 1975 Best of Dolly Parton album is a final verse she never recorded:

But nothing is as precious as my mama’s memory, and my coat of many colors that mama made for me.

The most personal line she ever wrote is the one nobody has heard.
