Harry Chapin‘s “Cats in the Cradle” may have been his only No. 1 hit, but the emotional folk-rock ballad has left a lasting impact that is simply immeasurable.
The storytelling masterpiece was released as a single from Chapin’s Verities & Balderdash album in 1974, and more than 50 years later, the song is still considered by many to be one of the most heartbreaking tracks ever recorded.
Written about a tragic relationship between a father and son, “Cats in the Cradle” tells the story of a man who is too busy to spend time with his son, and later finds the roles to be reversed when he grows older and his son has no time for his aging father.
It’s been voted as one of the “Saddest Songs of all Time”, according to a 2013 poll conducted by Rolling Stone, which placed the Chapin track in the No. 4 spot, behind other deep cuts like R.E.M.‘s “Everybody Hurts,” Nine Inch Nails‘ “Hurt” and Eric Clapton‘s “Tears in Heaven.”

But even the song’s sad story and gloomy tone didn’t stop the track from becoming a major commercial hit. “Cats in the Cradle” topped the Billboard Hot 100 for one week in December 1974, becoming Chapin’s only song to ever reach the No. 1 spot.
In 2011, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and is now considered to be the defining track of Chapin’s career. “Cats in the Cradle” has continued to resonate with listeners for more than decades, and still serves as an enduring staple of the folk-rock genre.
