1975 Classic Rock Song by Jethro Tull, Lasting Nearly 17 Minutes, Is Still an Underrated Hit

Jethro Tull’s “Baker St. Muse” remains one of the most overlooked long-form songs from the classic rock era. 

Released in 1975 on Minstrel in the Gallery, the 16-minute-and-39-second track mixes progressive rock, folk, classical sounds, electric guitar, acoustic guitar and Ian Anderson’s signature flute.

The song was ranked No. 7 on Collider’s list of the “10 Most Underrated Classic Rock Songs of All Time.” It was praised for bringing together several musical sections that move through different moods while still working as one complete piece.

“Baker St. Muse” is also one of Jethro Tull’s longest studio recordings. Ian Anderson, the band’s singer, composer and lyricist, called it a “marathon piece” and described it as a “mini concept piece,” according to Fidelity Magazine.

The song appears on the second side of Minstrel in the Gallery, Jethro Tull’s eighth studio album, released in September 1975. 

“Baker St. Muse” is not built like a simple verse-and-chorus song. Instead, it moves through six connected sections, with changes in tempo, sound and mood.

The main “Baker St. Muse” theme appears at the beginning and returns near the end. Between those parts are four smaller sections: “Pig-Me and the Whore,” “Nice Little Tune,” “Crash-Barrier Waltzer” and “Mother England Reverie.”

The opening section sets the scene around Baker Street in London. Anderson’s lyrics look at everyday people and places, including a bus stop, shop windows, an underpass, Indian restaurants and newspaper sellers.

The song then moves into “Pig-Me and the Whore,” a section about a prostitute and her suitor near Blandford Street. “Nice Little Tune” follows as a short instrumental passage with glockenspiel.

“Crash-Barrier Waltzer” changes the mood again. It presents an encounter between a homeless woman and a policeman in a surreal, almost theatrical way.

“Mother England Reverie” turns the focus back toward the narrator. The section deals with loneliness and a feeling of being lost, before the main “Baker St. Muse” theme returns near the 14-minute mark.

The track also moves between acoustic and electric sounds. Acoustic guitar, piano and strings are joined by electric guitar, drums, bass and flute. Some sections become louder and more rock-driven, while others are quieter and more reflective.

The setting of “Baker St. Muse” was closely connected to Anderson’s life when he wrote it.

Anderson was reportedly living alone in a small cottage near Baker Street, a busy London street between Regent’s Park and Hyde Park. He described feeling lonely and unfamiliar with that part of the city.

Anderson explained that he would often walk along Baker Street toward Oxford Street, where record companies were located. At night, he would walk in the opposite direction to an Indian restaurant. He described this routine as part of his life after returning from long tours and while writing songs for a new album.

Those walks helped shape the song’s view of city life.

Rather than telling one simple story, “Baker St. Muse” observes the people Anderson saw around him. The song moves between street scenes, characters and personal feelings.

The track was also written during a difficult period for Anderson. He had divorced his first wife, Jennie Franks, while also dealing with an unsuccessful courtship. These experiences formed part of the album’s emotional background, although Anderson said the album mixed personal material with fantasy.

Minstrel in the Gallery itself followed Jethro Tull’s earlier progressive rock successes, including Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. The 1975 album returned to a blend of electric and acoustic music while adding long instrumental passages and orchestral elements.

The track’s length also helped set it apart. At 16:39, “Baker St. Muse” is nearly 17 minutes long and is longer than most conventional rock songs. Yet its changing sections give the piece a clear structure rather than making it one continuous instrumental passage.

Nearly five decades after its release, the song remains a deep cut for listeners exploring Jethro Tull’s progressive rock catalog.
