1978 Career-Defining Classic Was No. 1 Hit 48 Years Ago Today

3 April 20262 Mins Read

Forty-eight years ago today, Charley Pride, the beloved 1970s country musician, topped the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart with his classic hit, “Someone Loves You Honey.”

“Someone Loves You Honey” was released in 1978 as the second single and title track on his 24th studio album. After only three months, the track achieved mainstream success, climbing to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Pride held the top position for two consecutive weeks and remained on the chart for 12, marking his 20th No. 1 hit.

The second single followed the success of Pride’s lead single, “More to Me,” which also peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. The album’s collection of hit material landed it the No. 4 spot on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. Someone Loves You Honey earned a Gold certification in 1978 after selling over 50,000 copies in Canada alone.

Produced by Pride and Jerry Bradley via RCA Victor, “Someone Loves You Honey” is recognizable for its blend of traditional roots and the evolving countrypolitan sound. Pride incorporated smooth instrumentation and a polished vocal performance designed for crossover success.

“Someone Loves You Honey” runs only two minutes long. Its efficient nature made it a favorite among radio DJs, contributing to the song’s swift rise to fame. Today, Pride’s hit remains relevant with modern audiences through streaming platforms. On Spotify alone, the song has accumulated over two million streams.

Written by Don Devaney, the song focuses on themes of endurance and support within a partnership. “Someone Loves You Honey” is a reassuring anthem about unconditional love regardless of the challenges that come along the way. The track’s persevering themes and catchy melody make it an exemplary hit within the 1970s country music scene.
