A truly great song can transcend time.
Clocking in at an epic 6 minutes and 23 seconds, Pink Floyd’s 1979 song “Comfortably Numb” has done exactly that. The nineteenth song on the band’s landmark double album, The Wall, the track has earned a reputation as one of the band’s best.
In a 2006 interview with Billboard, frontman David Gilmour rattled off a list of his own favorite Pink Floyd songs, naming classics like “Shine On Your Crazy Diamond” and “Wish You Were Here” before declaring, “Comfortably Numb is another one.”
The song was inspired by Pink Floyd songwriter Roger Waters’ real life experience. Having been medically injected with a tranquilizer and muscle relaxer for severe stomach distress before a U.S. show in 1977, Waters lost feeling in his hands and arms during the performance.
“God knows what he gave me, but it was some heavy muscle relaxant,” Waters said of the “sleazy” doctor in Philadelphia. “That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arms.”
This terrifying moment had an enduring effect on the musician and later made its way into the lyrics of “Comfortably Numb,” whose earlier versions were titled, “The Doctor.”
“It’s a feeling I think you get when you’re going crazy,” he said. “That everything is suddenly wrong,” Waters said of what inspired the lyrics for “Comfortably Numb.”
Waters had begun receding from the band during the In the Flesh Tour and the band had begun to crack from the inside. Soon enough this dysfunction and distance would manifest in the themes on The Wall and its accompanying movie of the same name.
Positioned as the last song on side three of the band’s 11th studio album, “Comfortably Numb” was itself the definition of a deep cut. The too-long for radio song was subsequently pared down to a 4-minute radio edit to promote The Wall. Released on June 3rd, 1980, the 3:59 single was backed with “Hey You.”
Though it didn’t chart well, the song resonated widely with the fan base and became a treasured favorite in a time when full album spins were de rigeur. The proof is in the overwhelming crowd response when the band plays the song live, even decades later.
Poignantly, the brilliance and lasting power of “Comfortably Numb” might just lie in the conflict and chaos that riddled Pink Floyd at the time of its inception, particularly between the two frontmen and co-songwriters, Waters and Gilmour.
During the making of The Wall, Waters had taken on a more central creative role, allegedly pushing the other band members to the periphery. However, this song was born of both lead men, in spite of their internal friction.
Gilmour’s majestic guitar solo, on which the 6-minute and 23-second song fades out, is widely considered his best, despite the fact that he has never played it live as it exists on the album. According to the guitar legend, this is intentional.
“There are a lot of guys who can play that,” he said in a 2025 interview with Rick Beato. “But I don’t play it [laughs]. To me, it’s just different every time. I mean, why would I want to do it the same?”
In 2022 “Comfortably Numb” became a top 40 hit in the U.K., and it returned to the spot in 2025, as a continuing sign of the public’s enduring love. It ranked #3 out of Pink Floyd’s best 20 songs in The Guardian, and It is listed as #314 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest rock songs of all time, alongside The Wall’s #87 placement on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time. The album has sold over 25 millions copies to date.
It has been said that the writing of “Comfortably Numb” marked the last time Waters and Gilmour worked constructively together and even that it was the pinnacle of their powerful and fiery creative dynamic. Even if it was their unofficial swansong, or perhaps because of it, unknowing fans came to love and celebrate “Comfortably Numb” and still name it as their personal Pink Floyd favorite 47 years later.
