1982 New Wave Classic Became a Timeless Love Anthem, Despite Never Reaching No. 1

21 May 20262 Mins Read

What is seen as a one-hit wonder by some remains one of the most enduring new wave songs of all time, and it’s still a hit decades after its release.

In 1982, the British band Modern English came out with the track “I Melt With You,” the second official single from their album After the Snow. Soon after it’s release, the song started taking over dance clubs and premiered on MTV. It was a major hit, although it never reached the top position on music charts, a milestone most bands dream of.

Modern English’s song also got a boost because of its inclusion in the soundtrack of the 1983 movie Valley Girl. It managed to reach the seventh spot on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock chart, and it peaked at 78 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 during the first release. The song was rereleased in 1990 and made it a few spots higher on the prestigious chart.

The dreamy dance song depicts an enduring love story between a couple living in a troubled and difficult world. “I Melt With You” ended up being a defining song of the 1980s, and even now, it’s a landmark track that many people still listen to and praise.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times in 1997, band member Robbie Grey talked about how the song came together. He recalled, “We were in Wales at the time and we hadn’t even been to America yet. I wrote the lyrics in three minutes–we didn’t have a clue what we were doing. It’s amazing.”

The international success of “I Melt With You” led Modern English to be labeled a one-hit wonder in the U.S., but in the band’s home country, they had a number of other hits, including songs like “Life in the Gladhouse” and “Hands Across the Sea.”

While Modern English has taken breaks here and there in its early years, the band is still active and performing over 45 years after it was first formed.
