If you’re planning to drive around Montreal this weekend, you may want to give yourself extra time or use a different route altogether.
According to Mobilité Montréal, the Quebec government’s official road closure site, both the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel and parts of Autoroute 40 near the Pont Charles-De Gaulle will be affected by major closures from Friday, April 4 to Sunday, April 6 due to ongoing repairs and inspections.
Here’s what’s shutting down:
Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel (A-25)
Drivers heading to or from the South Shore overnight Saturday into Sunday are going to hit a full shutdown. The tunnel will be completely closed in both directions from Saturday, April 5 at 11 p.m. until Sunday, April 6 at 9 a.m..
Access ramps to the tunnel will begin closing about 30 minutes ahead of time, and Souligny Avenue eastbound between Dickson and Honoré-Beaugrand will also be blocked off in the lead-up to the closure.
Autoroute 40 Westbound (Pont Charles-De Gaulle area)
People travelling between Montreal and Terrebonne this weekend should brace for multiple disruptions.
On Friday night (April 4), A-40 West will shut down completely between 9:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m., along with access ramps from Montée des Pionniers and Autoroute 640. The same closure will happen again on Sunday night (April 6) from 10:30 p.m. to 4 a.m..
During the day on Saturday and Sunday, things don’t get much better. From Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. to Sunday night at 10:30 p.m., only one of three westbound lanes on A-40 will remain open in the same area. Trucks will be restricted from using the centre lane, and the speed limit will be reduced to 70 km/h through the construction zone.
Needless to say, if you’re sticking to central Montreal or using public transit, you should be fine — but drivers heading across town or off-island can expect delays, especially those trying to cross between the North and South Shores.
The Quebec Ministry of Transport recommends checking Quebec 511 for live updates and planning extra travel time if you need to be on the road.
