2010 Ultimate Classic Ranked Best ‘Survivor’ Episode of All Time

For 26 years, Survivor has garnered a reputation for delivering high-quality reality television gold. Amid the airing of the monumental 50th season, it is only natural to reflect the series’ most epic moments. Out of hundreds of episodes, a select few endure as true standouts.

In 2024, Collider ranked the 15 best Survivor episodes ever aired. From early-season classics to modern gems, the team compiled a list of the most entertaining installments in the show’s history. Beating out both Tocantins‘ legendary episode 13, “The Martyr Approach,” at No. 3 and Cagayan’s episode 6, “Head of the Snake,” at No. 2, Heroes Vs. Villains’ episode 10, “Going Down in Flames,” took the top spot.

First aired in the spring of 2010, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains quickly became a franchise favorite. The season’s engaging cast and unique challenges infatuated viewers, raking in an average of 13.6 million viewers per episode. The season was a massive success for CBS, with ratings skyrocketing and streaming numbers doubling from previous seasons. Even 16 years after its release, it is still considered one of the best seasons of the show.

Among the episodes that stemmed from the 20th season was episode 10, “Going Down in Flames.” This was the season’s merge episode—the pivotal point when rival tribes combine and individual gameplay commences. Given the high stakes of a merge, it is fitting that the top-rated episode would be one, especially during the show’s most celebrated season.

“Going Down in Flames” features a mix of legendary gameplay, captivating players and an engaging immunity challenge. After previous episodes set up J.T. Thomas’s ill-fated decision to give his idol to Russell Hantz, the episode pays off in a shocking tribal council. Through Parvati Shallow’s iconic move of playing two Hidden Immunity Idols, the Villains asserted their dominance and J. T. Thomas was voted out.

The combination of brilliant strategy and nail-biting tension created a formula for an excellent Survivor episode. To this day, it perseveres as the show’s best episode, maintaining a 9/10 rating on IMDb.
