You’d think a band that’s played Madison Square Garden 96 times would’ve stopped counting.
Phish hasn’t.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the band announced four New Year’s shows at the Garden, Dec. 30 through Jan. 2. “And on January 2, Phish plays show 100 at Madison Square Garden,” the announcement reads.

32 Years and 96 Shows So Far
The band first played the Garden on Dec. 30, 1994. That night, Trey Anastasio sang the verses of “Fee” through a megaphone and the band covered Prince’s “Purple Rain.”
Phish came back for New Year’s in 1995, 1997, 1998 and 2002, and it’s spent most New Year’s Eves there since 2010.
There was the 13-show Baker’s Dozen run in the summer of 2017, which opened with free coconut donuts for fans at the door. There were five more shows this July, each one built around a year in the band’s history, from 1992 for show No. 92 to 1996 for No. 96. There were New Year’s runs nearly every winter in between.
That still left the band four short.
Why It Starts 2 Days Late
Phish’s New Year’s runs at the Garden usually start Dec. 28. This one doesn’t start until Dec. 30, because the New York Rangers host the Detroit Red Wings there on Dec. 29.
Even Phish has to work around hockey.

How to Get Tickets
Fans can request tickets through the band’s lottery until noon ET on Monday, Oct. 12. A limited number of hotel and ticket travel packages go on sale Thursday, Oct. 8, at noon ET.
Everyone else can try Friday, Oct. 16, at noon ET, when tickets go on sale to the general public.
If Your Count Comes Out Different
A nonprofit fan database of every Phish show already lists 100 past dates at the Garden. Four of those belong to the 2021 New Year’s run, which the band postponed during the Omicron surge and made up in April 2022.
Take those four out and you get 96. The band’s math checks out.
One of the April makeup shows opened with “Suzy Greenberg,” which the band dedicated to “the hero of the song,” Suzy Greenberg herself. She was at her first Phish show.
