5 best anime rivalries of all time, ranked

3 July 20267 Mins Read

A good rivalry can spice up the most trope-heavy anime. After all, even a nuanced protagonist needs a worthy foil to push them toward their destiny. Take the rivalry between Amuro Ray and Char Aznable in Mobile Suit Gundam: Both characters are driven by their ideological visions of what humanity’s future should look like, leading them to clash on multiple occasions. There are rare moments of alliance, like in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, but Amuro and Char are doomed to oppose one another, while their rivalry shapes future generations.

Sometimes, rivalries are more cerebral in nature, like with L and Light Yagami in Death Note. Light’s moral absolutism is at complete odds with L’s measured definition of justice, and this gap creates a charged dynamic that often feels like a game of mental chess. In other cases, initial hostility gradually morphs into begrudging respect (Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo in My Hero Academia) or even playful bickering despite an unshakeable trust (Sanji and Roronoa Zoro in One Piece).

That said, the examples listed above pale in comparison to the five greatest rivalries in anime history. Check out our list below, and then head to the comments to share your own top picks.

[Ed. note: This article contains spoilers for the anime and the respective rivalries mentioned below]

5. Lelouch Lamperouge and Suzaku Kururugi (Code Geass)

The world of Code Geass is steeped in political instability. Exploring an alternate history where the Earth is divided into three dominant superpowers, Code Geass critiques the absolute monarchy of the Holy Empire of Britannia, which treats its civilians like dirt. Lelouch Lamperouge and Suzaku Kururugi are victims of this broken system, whose childhood friendship is tested time and again as they grow up with conflicting philosophies. While the Britannian invasion of Japan tore Lelouch and Suzaku apart as kids, they reunite more than a decade later only to find themselves standing on opposing ends of the conflict.

The complexity of Code Geass hinges on tense politicking, forcing Lelouch to take on the masked persona of Zero, who believes that justice must be snatched from the oppressor by any means. Suzaku, who pilots a mech named Lancelot for the Britannian military, wants to reform the Empire from within without resorting to violence. Both sides indulge in hypocrisies, but Lelouch and Suzaku’s evolving relationship is the beating heart of a story about rebellion in an unjust world. Despite their core differences, Lelouch and Suzaku are like two sides of the same coin. “There is nothing we cannot accomplish together,” Suzaku tells Lelouch at one point, which recontextualizes the tragic sacrifice necessary to bring about global peace in the end.

4. Spike Spiegel and Vicious (Cowboy Bebop)

Vicious presses a katana against Spike while he points a gun at him in Cowboy Bebop Image: Sunrise

Shinichirō Watanabe might have written Spike Spiegel as a go-with-the-flow nihilist in Cowboy Bebop, but his fate was written in stone the moment Spike clashed with Vicious in episode 5, “Ballad of Fallen Angels.” Previously a top enforcer for the Red Dragon Crime Syndicate, Spike does his best to outrun his violent past by joining a ragtag group of bounty hunters. Spike and Vicious, once close partners and brothers-in-arms at the Syndicate, become arch nemeses after clashing over the woman they both love, Julia. Vicious’ near-assassination of Spike in “Ballad of Fallen Angels” sets the tone of their rivalry, which cannot be resolved until Julia is avenged and both parties drop dead.

While the bulk of Cowboy Bebop is about thrilling space adventures and found family, Spike’s hostile relationship with Vicious defines our protagonist every step of the way. The tragic incident with Julia robs Spike of the will to lead a meaningful existence, which is why he uses his laid-back attitude as a shield against unhealed trauma. Spike understands that the past will catch up to him any moment, and it does in the series finale, “The Real Folk Blues (Part 2).” This inevitable Spike versus Vicious fight is an operatic conclusion like no other, culminating in a barrage of unrelenting blows exchanged by two people who refuse to let go of the past.

3. Guts and Griffith (Berserk)

Guts and Griffith face one another against a wintry backdrop in Berserk Image: OLM Team Iguchi

Berserk has always been an uncompromising look at the trauma of profound betrayal and what it means to cling to human resilience in the face of abject cruelty. The corruptive nature of power and ambition shapes Griffith, whose demonic transformation into Femto brings out a brand of sadistic cruelty that is fueled by megalomania. In contrast, Guts’ arc deals with the fallout of intense physical and psychological trauma, and how someone as jaded as him must actively shatter the cycle of revenge. While the Guts-Griffith bond starts on equal footing, Griffith’s unchecked ego and obsessive tendencies accelerate his ruin and bring out the horrifying consequences of the Eclipse.

Although Guts and Griffith’s intertwined stories are far from over, their final confrontation must venture beyond traditional revenge and what that might mean from a moralistic standpoint. Berserk has never been a straightforward revenge tale — this is a story about defying fate by embracing free will, finding empathy in a sea of darkness, and fighting for what’s right. Griffith’s crimes venture beyond what he has done to Guts, as he is a symbol of messianic hypocrisy and the tyranny that comes with it. No matter what happens next, Griffith must suffer, and Guts should play a seminal role in bringing about an unforgettably grisly end.

2. Goku and Vegeta (Dragon Ball)

It’s not an exaggeration to state that Goku and Vegeta from Dragon Ball share one of the most iconic rivalries in anime history. This is a rather one-sided affair, as Vegeta’s extreme pride and egotistical nature spur him to surpass the free-spirited Goku at all costs. This intense dynamic has undergone several changes over the course of the franchise, starting with Vegeta’s obsessive need to put Goku in his place, which gradually transitions into a more even-footed relationship of mutual trust and respect. Even before Vegeta accepts Goku’s unprecedented skill and power, he is driven by a competitive spirit that Goku doesn’t directly take part in. After all, our spiky-haired protagonist is more preoccupied with becoming the greatest warrior to keep people safe from major threats instead.

Despite the obvious lack of malicious sentiments, the Goku-Vegeta relationship holds meaning as it pushes both parties to acknowledge their flaws and push beyond personal limits. Vegeta is a necessary foil to Goku, as he embodies the deeply human sentiments of jealous pride and the drive to prove himself through meticulous training and strategic combat. While Vegeta is forced to deal with this short-sightedness, Goku also finds reasons to push the limits of heroic courage, thanks to his empathy for Vegeta’s frustrations. This becomes the blueprint for mutual growth, allowing Dragon Ball to explore depth beyond its breathtaking fight choreography and engaging lore.

1. Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha (Naruto)

Naruto has a lot going for it, but the central rivalry between Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha actively propels this enduring coming-of-age story forward. A part of Team 7, alongside Sakura Haruno, Naruto and Sasuke clash as soon as they meet due to their markedly different upbringing and worldviews. Sasuke’s cold and aloof nature paints him as a traumatized yet promising prodigy, while Naruto’s isolated upbringing as a shunned orphan generates feelings of jealous inadequacy. Although this childhood rivalry is more playful than serious, Sasuke’s defection into a rogue ninja injects immense complexity into this dynamic. Having fought together for the same cause as kids, Sasuke’s departure shatters Naruto’s world and propels him to drag his dear friend back to the light.

The lighthearted nature of this rivalry takes a serious turn in Naruto: Shippuden, as their differences are no longer rooted in petty insecurities, but major ideological differences. Sasuke externalizes his trauma by chasing power at any cost, but Naruto firmly believes that Sasuke can be redeemed once he understands that the cycle of hatred can be broken. This is a charged, longstanding dynamic that is viciously tested by fate, and is only resolved after both Naruto and Sasuke push themselves to the limit and have nothing left to give during the Valley of the End clash. Ultimately, Naruto’s unwavering faith in Sasuke saves the day, and the two become trusted comrades for the foreseeable future.
