63 Years Later, the Creepiest Episode of 'The Twilight Zone' is Still Nightmare Fuel

Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been a sucker for creepy doll stories. It probably started with R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps book Night of the Living Dummy. From there, my love for that kind of story grew with movies like Child’s Play and Puppet Master, as well as the creepy X-Files episode “Chinga,” written by Stephen King. Only later, when I got more into the classic television series The Twilight Zone, did I realize that so much of this particular genre was inspired by one classic TV episode, which also happens to be the creepiest episode of the series. It’s an episode that, along with the rest of the series, is available for free on Tubi.

The Twilight Zone is a black-and-white television series created by Rod Serling, who also hosted the show and wrote most of the episodes. It aired on television from 1959 until 1964. Over five seasons, 156 episodes were produced. The show is an anthology that delves into stories of both science fiction and horror, and its impact on both of those genres has been tremendous. This includes the entire horror subgenre of living doll films, from Child’s Play to Annabelle, thanks to one particularly disturbing episode that inspired them all.

“Living Doll” is about a little girl named Christie (Tracy Stratford), who lives in a troubled household with her mother Annabelle (Mary La Roche) and new stepfather Erich (Telly Savalas). Erich is a mean, insecure man, frustrated by his infertility and inability to have a child with his new wife. He also rejects his stepdaughter’s affections, telling her he is not her father. The problems in the family get worse when Annabelle buys Christie a new doll called Talky Tina, which Erich disapproves of because of the cost. This also sparks a fight in front of Christie and her new doll.

When the key in Tina’s back is wound up, she says, “My name is Talky Tina, and I love you very much.” But when Erich is alone with the doll and he turns the key out of simple curiosity, the doll says to him, “My name is Talky Tina and I don’t think I like you.” After that, every time he’s left alone with the doll, it says increasingly threatening things, like, “My name is Talky Tina, and I’m beginning to hate you.” He initially thinks it’s a trick from his wife designed to humiliate him. Once he’s convinced the doll is some evil entity out to get him, he tries to destroy it, but it continuously reappears in Christie’s bed as Erich grows more erratic.

Similar things happen in pretty much every killer doll story. To be clear, The Twilight Zone didn’t invent the genre — its history dates back hundreds if not thousands of years — but “Living Doll” helped to solidify and popularize a lot of the tropes of these stories, as well as inspire those that followed in its path. Chucky creator Don Mancini has cited the episode as an influence on his famous killer doll. Its impact can also be felt in things like the Annabelle movies, as well as M3GAN. R. L. Stine has noted that he was greatly influenced by The Twilight Zone and likely “Talky Tina,” though the episodes “The Dummy,” and “Caesar and Me” likely had a more direct influence on Night of the Living Dummy, as both of those are about living ventriloquist dummies. (Those are also great episodes, but “Living Doll” is slightly scarier.)

Why “Living Doll” is still scary

“Living Doll” stands as the creepiest Twilight Zone episode of the series for a number of reasons. For one, the story is a tight 20-something minutes. It’s also as much about Erich’s paranoia as it is about the doll, making for a good, universally relatable story.

Most importantly, baby dolls are just plain creepy. They were creepy in the 1960s and they’re creepy now. And Talky Tina, with her blank, expressionless face and childish voice, is still effectively scary. Her scariness is only aided by the fact that The Twilight Zone is black-and-white.

Contrary to some other classic episodes of The Twilight Zone, “Living Doll” ages remarkably well. There are a lot of episodes of the series which tell a great story, but the effectiveness of those stories, especially to someone who is new to them, is undermined by bad special effects or the reveal of an underwhelming monster. A great example of this is “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” about a man (William Shatner) on an airplane who keeps seeing a gremlin on the wing of the plane. The story is great, and Shatner’s paranoia feels real, but once we see the creature, it looks like a guy in a silly gorilla costume. There is nothing scary about the gremlin, so it undercuts the entire episode.

But with “Living Doll,” it still feels fresh thanks to the un-aging creepiness of baby dolls. It’s an unsettling story with real, human characters and a villain that went on to inspire many more scary dolls to come. So, if you’re someone who has ever had a nightmare from the likes of Chucky or Annabelle, you’ve got Talky Tina, and Rod Serling, to thank.
