8 Most Unhinged Dark Urge Lines in BG3

7 October 20268 Mins Read

The Dark Urge — an origin character afflicted with amnesia and the most intense bloodlust of all time — has some extremely memorable dialogue in Baldur’s Gate 3. At every turn, when you pause to review your response options, you’ll get lines that are funny, chilling, and heartbreaking. Sometimes, that voice belongs to the character (often referred to as, simply, “Durge”). Sometimes that voice belongs to the game’s narrator, Amelia Tyler, speaking as The Dark Urge’s inner monologue. Tyler noted in a December 2023 interview with TechRadar that her favorite Dark Urge line is just a creepy, demonic laugh. That’s certainly a contender for the most haunting line from this character. So are the following eight.

Spoilers ahead for a Dark Urge run.

9

The one with the old friend (Act 1)

Image: Larian Studios

“…her blood covers you, and its warmth feels like the embrace of an old friend.”

As The Dark Urge navigates the game’s first act — meeting new companions, assessing the terrain, deciding whether or not to eat hands that pop out of boulder portals — they’re doing so with precious little information. All they have is a name, a tadpole, and a headache. This, unfortunately, makes the very first bloodthirsty Dark Urge act all the more shattering (especially if you’re attempting to be “good” and fight your darker urges). Early in the game, you meet Alfira, a tiefling bard whose song you help finish in the Emerald Grove. She’ll ask to join the party, and you let her. All is well!

Until the sun comes up, that is, and you see what you’ve done. Morning finds her dead, with so many wounds her body is barely recognizable, and you’re reeling, trying to remember what happened. The narrator quickly eulogizes her as “the brave girl who earnestly swore to devote her life to your cause.” Astarion’s helpfully wondering why you’re drenched in blood. Meanwhile, you’re wondering why her blood feels good. While there’s more gore to come, the surprise of this first scene makes it immediately clear that a Durge run is going to be dark.

8

The one where they were sweet once (Act 1)

“Did I play games like this in my youth? Was I sweet once?”

Step near the ruined schoolhouse in the Blighted Village, and you’ll find a hopscotch game drawn on the ground. Your party has opinions about it. Lae’zel is, for one, unimpressed: “The young,” she grumbles, “should be sparring, not making merry.” (If your Tav is a githyanki, your dialogue option will be even blunter, calling the hopscotch outline “inscrutable markings.”) If you’re playing as The Dark Urge, an amnesiac who can’t remember their childhood, let alone childhood games, this is a quick, cutting moment of confusion. Were you an innocent child, once upon a time? What happened that made you so bloodthirsty now?

7

The one with the roasted dwarf (Act 1)

goblin-camp-bg3 Image: Larian Studios

“I much prefer roasted dwarf.”

You can’t fault the Durge for knowing what they like, right? In the Emerald Grove, talk to some of the tiefling refugees crowded into the druid sanctuary, and one of them will offer your party a bowl of gruel. The Dark Urge can respond to this generosity with a helpful tip about their preferences. If you decide that’s a bit much, you do have the choice to do something a bit more polite in your dialogue options: “Stop thinking about delicious dwarf and take the bowl.” Later on, when you’re in the goblin camp, there are dwarf parts roasting on the spit, and the Durge remarks that whatever is cooking smells really, really good. Say what you want about the murderous Dark Urge: They are consistent.

6

The one with the made-up memories (Act 1)

“Make up the kind of treasured memories you expect the sane to feel.”

In the Underdark’s Ebonlake Grotto, you meet a myconid colony, and you’ll get to chat fairly extensively with one mushroom ruler in particular: Sovereign Glut. As Glut is getting to know your party, feeling out whether you can be trusted, Glut asks the party to describe their homes. For most, this is not a difficult question. The Durge, however, has no home to describe. They could admit the amnesia, or they could fall back on an easily made-up detail (hopscotch?). Instead, the narrator invites you to lean into the Durge’s bewildering sense of both not knowing who they are and feeling like they have to cover up for it.

5

The one with the corpse sports (Act 1)

grymforge-bg3 Image: Larian Studios

“My friend, I play Goliath Goatball, Moon Hockey, and Pegasus Polo with corpses.”

What happens when you’re trying to one-up someone, but the only references you’ve got to work with are the most intense things anyone’s ever heard? Once you reach Grymforge in the Underdark, you’ll run into a pair of duergars kicking the bodies of captive deep gnomes into the water. Walk up to them, and they’ll snap that unless you’re here to play janitor with the corpses, you’ll need to leave. The Durge has a counteroffer: A menu of sports, all played with the dead. An odd thing for an amnesiac — or anyone, really — to say to strangers, eh? (Corpses aside, Moon Hockey does sound like fun.)

4

The one with the, uh, rebrand (Act 2)

“I’ve been workshopping ‘The Sleepless Knife’ and ‘The Death Dream.'”

Reach Last Light Inn, a refuge in the Shadow-Cursed Lands, and Fist Ulthred of the Flaming Fist will be waiting in the plaza. He’s sour that his unit can’t get any rooms, and busy arguing with Harper Essius about whether your party can be trusted. When you interact with him, he asks you for a name. The Durge (who usually goes by your chosen name, some variant of “The Dark Urge,” or “Master”, on special occasions) decides that this is an opportunity to float some alternatives they’ve been noodling on: The Sleepless Knife, The Death Dream. Ulthred is not impressed. “Move along, godsdammit,” he says. “Bloody freaks everywhere.”

The one where Durge is overdoing it (Act 2)

He Who Was, a Drow, found in the Shadow-Cursed Lands of Baldur’s Gate 3. Image: Larian Studios via Polygon

“Kill the dead. Kill the killed dead. Kill the killed dead again and again.”

East of Last Light Inn, on a ruined battlefield, there’s a shadar-kai calling himself He Who Was. Whoever he is, he’s drawn a ritual circle around the corpse of a dwarven woman named Madeline, and he’s using Speak With Dead to question her. On a normal, non-Durge run, this character and his odd ritual is one of the creepier things you see in-game. For the Durge, this is a normal Tuesday. When He Who Was asks you to help put Madeline’s spirit on trial so he can make her suffer more, the Durge gets excited about it. Here, as the Durge, you can offer up a plan with no end condition and no verdict required: Just kill. Over and over. Endlessly. All killing, all the time. Even He Who Was doesn’t love the sound of that.

2

The one with the birthday (Act 3)

carms-garms-bg3 Image: Larian Studios

“I was sculpted from a slice of Bhaal’s own dead flesh. I have no birthday.”

Early in Act 3, as you wander around Wyrm’s Crossing, you’ll find Naaber, a chatty NPC, hovering around Carm’s Garms — a clothing shop. Naaber is happily auditioning new identities in search of his true calling: barbarian, fighter, sorcerer, rogue. The Durge has a cynical take for nearly all of them. Let Naaber cycle through to being a bard, and he’ll serenade you, singing you a quick “happy birthday.” The Durge is not amused. If you’re not already aware, by this point, that you’re a Bhaalspawn, your dialogue options will inform you — since, in response to being wished a happy birthday, you can decide to tell Naaber that you don’t have one. Totally normal!

Credit to Naaber: After you tell him that you’re a child of a murder god, he’s unfazed, and just wants to know if you think he’s a good bard. There, you have the option to tell him you’d like to cut out his tongue, but want the whole city to suffer from his bad music. (The cruelty of the Durge knows no bounds.)

Githyanki fighter Lae'zel smiles at the camera moments before mounting her Red Dragon.
