‘80s Rock Band’s Classic Song Hits 1 Billion Streams After 47 Years

24 January 20263 Mins Read

The Cure continues to show their timeless power as one of the most beloved bands of the 80s.

As a slew of classic hits resurface and captivate a new generation thanks to social media, the English rock band are still breaking records decades later.

The award-winning band officially joined Spotify’s “Billions Club” after their hit song “Boys Don’t Cry” garnered over one billion streams.

As reported by Consequence, the 1979 track has become their first song to reach the billion-stream milestone on the platform, marking a notable achievement for the band nearly five decades after its release.

Written by the band’s primary founder Robert Smith, along with former bassist Michael Dempsey and drummer Lol Tolhurst, the track was not initially a hit upon its original release.

The song only broke through seven years later, when “Boys Don’t Cry” captured global attention following The Cure’s re-release of the track in 1986. It was after the success of their 1985 album, The Head on the Door.

Drummer and keyboardist Lol Tolhurst, bass guitarist Porl Thompson, bassist Simon Gallup, English singer, songwriter and musician Robert Smith, drummer Boris Williams and keyboardist Roger O’Donnell of The Cure pose for a studio portrait during The Kissing Tour on July 30, 1987.

On the other hand, another The Cure song is poised to enter the “Billions Club” as their 1992 hit “Friday, I’m in Love” is steadily approaching the milestone with roughly 970 million streams.

The exclusive yet unofficial group highlights songs that have crossed the billion-stream mark on the platform.

Currently, the top artist with the most entries in Spotify’s “Billions Club” is The Weeknd, as cited by Forbes.

The Canadian singer, songwriter and producer has 28 songs in the club, surpassing fellow artists like Drake, Bad Bunny and Ariana Grande.

Meanwhile, the fastest song to reach one billion streams was Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ Grammy-winning track “Die With a Smile,” achieving the milestone in just 97 days.

The Cure Re-Releases Their Classic Hits

The influential English rock band delivered surprising news to fans after announcing the release of a remastered edition of “Boys Don’t Cry” labeled “New Voice – New Mix.”

The award-winning song is finally getting a wide digital release, along with new physical reissues.

“FOR FORTY YEARS ‘BOYS DON’T CRY’ (‘NEW VOICE – NEW MIX’) WAS ONLY AVAILABLE ON 7″ & 12″ VINYL AND VIA THE OFFICIAL VIDEO – UNTIL NOW! THE 1986 VERSION – INCLUDING A 2026 REMASTER – WILL BE AVAILABLE TO STREAM ON THE 30TH OF JANUARY. YOU CAN ALSO PRE-ORDER THE REMASTERED VERSION ON CD & VINYL NOW VIA LINK IN BIO,” the caption reads.

Moreover, the band’s frontman offered a special message detailing why they opted to revisit the song.

“I RE-SANG IT IN 1986 BECAUSE I THOUGHT I COULD DO A BIT MORE WITH THE SONG – I FELT I WAS IMPROVING AS A SINGER, BECOMING MORE CONFIDENT – SO ALTHOUGH I DIDN’T REALLY DEVIATE TOO MUCH FROM THE ORIGINAL VOCAL MELODY OR PHRASING, I KNEW I COULD GET A BIT MORE TONE AND EMOTION INTO THE REWORK,” Smith said, as mentioned in an Instagram post, which has garnered support and anticipation from fans.
