Thirty years after introducing the world to “Mother Mother,” Tracy Bonham is bringing the celebration back to where it all began.
The alternative rock singer-songwriter has announced a Nov. 13 hometown performance at Sonia in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as part of her ongoing 30th anniversary tour celebrating her breakout 1996 debut album, The Burdens of Being Upright. The newly announced date comes one day before a scheduled performance at Drom in New York City.
Bonham shared the news directly with fans.
“Boston! ❤️ Celebrating Burdens for reals at Sonia in Cambridge Fri Nov. 13!” she wrote, adding that she loved reconnecting with fans during her recent residency at The Burren and was excited to “spice things up” with the upcoming Sonia show.
“Sonia used to be T.T. the Bear’s,” Bonham said in a video uploaded to Instagram. “It’s in Cambridge and it used to be the Old Haunt. We all played there. And so, I can’t wait to play on that stage again and I can’t wait to play Burdens of Being Upright the entire album with my OG band.”
The anniversary tour marks a major milestone in Bonham’s career.
Released in 1996, The Burdens of Being Upright introduced listeners to Bonham’s blend of alternative rock, post-grunge, and emotionally charged songwriting. Powered by the breakout single “Mother Mother,” the album became one of the defining alternative releases of the decade, with the song earning heavy airplay on modern rock radio and MTV thanks to its raw intensity and unforgettable vocal performance.
The celebration extends beyond the live shows.
Bonham is also re-recording The Burdens of Being Upright, with the updated version expected to arrive in fall 2026. The new recording will give fans a fresh perspective on the album that launched her career while honoring the songs that first connected her with audiences three decades ago.
“The Burdens album was a rebellious encounter with expectations from others, claiming my own identity, and the confusion and rage as a young woman on my own,” Tracy explained in a statement. “Thirty years later, the songs are as impactful but are landing differently for me. For the past 30 years, I’ve been playing small ever since the ‘Angry Young Woman’ moniker that made me recoil. I hated being labeled, but still, I am a Gen X’er in menopause who is still trying to figure it all out, I am a single mother of a teenage boy in a cruel world (no, everything’s not fine), and I have let the narrative of not having a voice lead me down dark paths. These songs are ultimately transforming who I am now.”
Since emerging in the mid-1990s, Bonham has built a career that stretches well beyond her breakthrough album. In addition to releasing multiple studio records, she has explored classical music, acting, and composing while remaining a respected figure in alternative rock. Yet “Mother Mother” has continued to find new audiences, enjoying renewed popularity through streaming platforms and social media years after its original release.
“When Burdens came out, I was 27 or 28,” Bonham told Creative Reverberations. “Those songs were trying to figure out young Tracy, and now I’m 30 years older and still trying to figure out young Tracy. So the thread is still there, but I think now comes with it some wisdom. Part of my mission is to alchemize whatever that anger was, whatever that deep sadness was, whatever the loss was that I was dealing with into something beautiful for the world.”
With another hometown performance now on the schedule, Bonham’s anniversary celebration continues to grow. Thirty years after The Burdens of Being Upright introduced her distinctive voice to the world, the beloved alternative rock artist is once again inviting fans to celebrate the album, and the song, that started it all.
