’90s Heavy Metal Band Makes Exclusive Announcement 36 Years After Forming

At The Gates, the Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1990, announced exciting news for fans.

Amid the band’s hiatus from touring and live shows following the death of beloved frontman Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg in 2025, the “Blinded by Fear” hitmaker is working behind the scenes to offer fans something extra.

In an Instagram update, At The Gates unveiled a limited-edition book titled …And Justice For Art, written by journalist and musician Ramón “Oscuro” Martos García.

The book, which focuses on the visual history of the band’s most iconic album covers, contains 372 glossy color pages featuring more than 700 graphics that showcase a collection of sketches and artworks, as well as interviews and behind-the-scenes accounts of the creation of album covers by renowned illustrators such as Travis Smith, Eliran Kantor, Dan Seagrave, Costin Chioreanu and Valnoir, as well as heavy metal icons including Soulfly and Nailbomb’s Max Cavalera, Carcass’ Jeff Walker, Amorphis’ Esa Holopainen and more.

What made the book special was not only that there are only 500 copies worldwide but also that the foreword was written by David Vincent, also known as Evil D, the former Morbid Angel member and current Vltimas frontman.

Vincent shares a special bond with At The Gates since they were touring partners during the extreme metal scene of the 1990s.

This hardcover volume features a chapter with all the details about the sleeve artwork for At The Gates ”Slaughter Of The Soul.” The book also contains stories about the covers of hundreds of Metal albums, including Slayer’s ”Reign In Blood,” Black Sabbath’s ”Black Sabbath,” Obituary’s ”Cause Of Death,” Iron Maiden’s ”Killers,” Opeth’s ”Heritage,” Katatonia’s ”Dead End Kings” and many more,” the caption reads.

The announcement thrilled fans, especially those who missed seeing the band perform live.

Prior to the launch of the limited-edition book, At The Gates released their eighth studio album, The Ghost of a Future Dead, which served as a tribute to the late vocalist.

The album is the band’s first release since the passing of Lindberg.

On Sept. 16, 2025, the band confirmed the unfortunate news of the death of the Swedish lead vocalist at the age of 52 due to complications related to adenoid cystic carcinoma.
