How did J.K. Rowling become famous?
Born Joanne Rowling on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, J.K. Rowling loved writing since childhood, penning her first story about a bunny when she was just 6 years old.
After her mother was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Rowling’s family life at home grew difficult, and she turned to schoolwork to channel her energy. She majored in French and classics at the University of Exeter after high school when her parents encouraged her to be bilingual to expand her job opportunities. After graduating, she studied at a London secretarial school, which she described to The Scotsman as a “mistake” since she was terrible at the job—but it did teach her a key skill: Typing. “Now I type my own books, so that’s been incredibly useful,” she said. “I’m pretty fast.”
Rowling moved to Portugal to teach English at night and write during the day. While there, she met her first husband, Jorge Arantes, and they married in October 1992. Their daughter, Jessica, was born in July 1993. The marriage was short and allegedly abusive, and Rowling left Arantes. She eventually took their daughter with her to live in Scotland, bringing along a copy of her manuscript for Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone. She told The New Yorker that she was on public assistance and was as “poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless.”

After getting her teaching certification and spending time writing in cafes, Rowling finished Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1995. She obtained a literary agent, who submitted the book to 12 publishers—all of whom rejected it and told Rowling to essentially give up dreams of being an author. It wasn’t until a publisher at Bloomsbury read the book to his then-8-year-old daughter that Rowling got a shot at success.
Rowling initially made about $4,200 in royalties for the first printing of the book, which was 5,650 copies. When Scholastic purchased the rights to distribute Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the United States, she made $105,000. Scholastic requested a title change for the United States editions of the books, and they compromised on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, released in September 1998. By December, it was a New York Times bestseller, and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter was born—complete with more bestselling books, movie and Broadway adaptations, an upcoming TV series, a theme park and a slew of merchandise, all of which made her very rich.
