Vancouver foodies, your time has come. The Vancouver MICHELIN Guide is officially out for 2024, which means the city’s top restaurants, bars, and eateries are about to get busier. So grab your forks and get ready for the best of the best!
On Thursday, October 3rd, the MICHELIN Guide revealed its selection of this year’s world-class restaurants, Bib Gourmand, and MICHELIN Star winners, inviting local chefs to gather at The Commodore to celebrate.
These latest selections mark the very best that Vancouver has to offer – be it casual fare, innovative plates and sips, or fine dining options.
First published in France at the turn of the 20th century, the MICHELIN Guide has become a household name when it comes to identifying the most memorable meals and hospitality experiences across the globe.
Inspection criteria
The inspectors’ process is five-fold: To identify the best product quality, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavours, the personalities of the chefs, and consistency over time.
According to the MICHELIN Guide, these criteria guarantee a fair selection – so a Starred restaurant in Paris or New York holds the same value as one in Vancouver and beyond.
2024 Michelin Special Awards
First up are the Michelin Special Awards, starting with the best mixology in the city.
The 2024 Exceptional Cocktail Award goes to Fraser Crawford of Kissa Tanto.
Next up is the Sommelier Award, which recognizes the ability to bring flavour and stories together through exceptional wine pairings. Reverie Beall of AnnaLenna has earned the 2024 accolade.
According to the Guide, the Michelin Service Award celebrates the ability to anticipate needs and create a memorable dining experience for guests, with the 2024 award going to Bailey Hayward of Gary’s.
Finally, we come to the Michelin Young Chef Award, which celebrates passion, vision, creativity, and all things culinary excellence. This year’s rising star in Vancouver? Yoji Masuda of Sushi Masuda.
Oh, and it’s not the only accolade that Sushi Masuda will get tonight…
2024 Michelin-Recommended & Bib Gourmand
Next, we get to this year’s Michelin-Recommended Restaurants. In addition to selections that have maintained their recommendation status from last year, we’ve got two new spots to note: Bravo and Zab Bite – Thai E-Sarn Cuisine
The Bib Gourmand Award recognizes restaurants with incredible value and quality, a distinction that’s been awarded to another long list of returning restaurants.
Vancouver’s newest spot with the coveted Bib Gourmand distinction, however, is Gary’s in South Granville.
2024 Michelin Stars
These are the best of the best, so let’s break out a drum roll…
According to the Guide, Michelin Stars are awarded to establishments recognized on an international scale, crafting unforgettable experiences among the best in the world.
This year, Sushi Masuda has earned One Michelin Star, joining the ranks of the 2023 recipients. The omakase restaurant just opened this March, so earning a Star this early on is quite an incredible feat!
