Hyundai has issued a noncompliance recall on thousands of vehicles across Canada due to a problem with their rearview camera systems.
A Hyundai spokesperson said in a statement there are approximately 48,509 affected vehicles in Canada.
The recall applies to the following:
• 29,849 Elantra ICE units (2021-2022 model year)
• 255 Elantra N (ICE) units (2021-2022 model year)
• 2,660 Elantra HEV units (2021-2022 model year)
• 11,397 Santa Fe ICE (2021-2022 model year)
• 1,323 Santa Fe Plug-in HEV (2022 model year)
• 3,025 units Santa Fe HEV (2021-2022 model year)
Hyundai noted that the recalled vehicles have rearview camera systems that risk failure over time due to the possibility of insufficient shoulder joints on the devices’ printed circuit board (PCB). This could cause the rearview image to not properly display, increasing the risk of a crash.
Transport Canada noted on its website that the impacted vehicles fail to comply with Canadian regulators’ requirement that the rearview image be displayed when the vehicle is reversing.
Owners of the subject vehicles will be notified with more information about bringing their cars into a Hyundai dealership for the replacement of the rearview camera at no cost.
In the meantime, customers can input their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Hyundai Canada’s recalls page to determine if their vehicle is impacted. Customers can also contact Hyundai at 1-888-216-2626 for more information.
A recall for the same issue has also been called for Hyundai cars in the U.S., where over 200,000 vehicles have been affected.
