IHG Hotels & Resorts is celebrating its 50th anniversary of operations in Greater China. Since opening its first property in the region in 1975, IHG has expanded its portfolio to include 800 hotels, contributing significantly to the growth of the hospitality industry and supporting economic development in the region.
Elie Maalouf, CEO of IHG Hotels & Resorts, expressed pride in the company’s accomplishments over the past five decades. IHG has expanded its presence in Greater China by building a diverse range of hotels, from luxury and lifestyle hotels to premium and essential stays. The company is committed to future growth in the region, in line with policies supporting foreign enterprises.
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, IHG has initiated various creative initiatives to engage with consumers across Greater China. These include branding a high-speed train, showcasing light displays on major city skyscrapers, and strategic print placements with leading media outlets.
IHG’s growth has consistently aligned with Greater China’s economic evolution, with innovations like expanding social media and e-commerce channels, and creating iconic hotels such as the Regent Shanghai on the Bund.
Significant milestones in IHG’s history in Greater China include opening its first hotel in Hong Kong in 1975, launching the Crowne Plaza Hotels & Resorts brand in 1991, introducing the InterContinental Hotels & Resorts brand in 2000, and opening the first Holiday Inn Express hotel in 2004.
In 2025, IHG reached a significant milestone with 800 open hotels in Greater China, highlighting its brand strength, localized strategy, and sustainable growth. To mark this achievement, IHG unveiled “The IHG Greater China 800 Club”, showcasing recently opened flagship hotels in key destinations, chosen for their strategic locations, unique designs, and exceptional facilities.
Daniel Aylmer, CEO of IHG Greater China, said that the launch of ‘The IHG Greater China 800 Club ‘ reflects the company’s commitment to setting new benchmarks in hospitality. Looking ahead, IHG plans to continue expanding into emerging cities, elevating digital guest experiences, and championing sustainable growth.
Today, IHG holds 13 brands and more than 1,300 openings and pipelines in Greater China, reflecting its five decades of dedication and innovation in the region.
