PHILADELPHIA – A 10-year-old boy is still recovering in the hospital after putting his sister’s life before his own in a moment of terror.
The backstory:
Andre Howard III, who also goes by “Trey,” was getting doughnuts after school with his dad and sister on Friday when they were all suddenly caught up in the chaotic scenes of the plane that crashed in Northeast Philadelphia.
As debris from the plane fell to the ground, Trey’s dad tells FOX 29 that the young boy dove on top of his sister, potentially saving her life.
As Trey protected his sister, he was struck in the head with a piece of flying metal debris.
He had to undergo emergency brain surgery, but is now in stable condition at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dig deeper:
Trey is one of many victims who were injured when a medical transport plane crashed along Cottman Avenue Friday evening.
Mayor Cherelle Parker confirms at least 22 people were injured during the crash, in addition to the seven people who were killed.
All six Mexican citizens onboard the plane perished in the crash. They were identified as Capt. Alan Alejandro Montoya Perales, co-pilot Josue de Jesus Juarez Juarez, Dr. Raul Meza Arredondo, paramedic Rodrigo Lopez Padilla, patient Valentina Guzman Murillo and her mother, Lizeth Murillo Ozuna.
The seventh victim was killed on the ground, inside a vehicle. Their identity has yet to be released.
An investigation into the cause of the crash continues as investigators sift through debris, and begin to analyze data after discovering the plane’s “blackbox,” which could reveal vital information.
