Oni Press is resurrecting the world of viral animated short The Summoning with creator Elyse Castro for a three-volume graphic novel series.
The original Frederator Studios short first premiered on Cartoon Hangover’s YouTube channel in 2017, and was a pilot of what was supposed to be a 12-episode series spearheaded by creator Elyse Castro. The short followed a cat girl witch named Claire and her mischievous familiar Edgar as they sought out a missing ingredient for Claire’s summoning potion. But in the eight years since the short’s premiere, despite racking up 6 million views on YouTube, the show did not move forward.
But with the graphic novel series, Castro gets a chance to delve back into her world.
“For as long as I can remember my imagination has been home to the whimsical, witchy world of Ridgewood,” said creator Elyse Castro. “Where Claire and Edgar experiment with magik, eat tasty treats, and accidentally annoy their fluffy neighbor. It’s nearly been 8 years since I was able to bring some of this world to you all through The Summoning cartoon short, and I’m ‘over the broom’ to share one of Claire and Edgar’s most important adventures with you all in The Art of the Craft. Please enjoy, and remember—do no harm.”
The Summoning Volume One: The Art of the Craft hits stores on Oct. 7. Check out the first 10 pages here:
